Just killed my job, moving in with folks....somewhat clueless

Hi folks,
28yr old female here....currently living in Maine....moving back to the "homeland" of Midwest on Saturday. Killed my job as a middle management in student life at a small university a couple weeks ago...was in a total crisis of being uber-stressed, over-worked, under-paid, without my support network in an area of the country that is totally remote and different from all that I've known...

Anyway, all my education and training has led me to the path (higher education administration) that I am on. Now I am really questioning if I want to be doing what I've been doing (planning entertainment/comedians, etc., supervising residence hall operations, administering judicial process, managing mental health crisis, programming on campus, etc)...and am looking to retool my life.

I am moving back in with my parents (haven't lived with them for 11yrs) without an end in sight of what that will look like....not sure what I want to do for work, but need to figure something out. I love giving presentations, writing/blogging, leading workshops, working with staff on resumes, etc but it is hard to know where to start in this New World of my life because everything else I've done has been really....well, laid out and planned.

Now I am without a plan, without an income, and need support and direction...

Any help would be great!

Hey Mickey,

Sounds like you're a bit lost, but no need to worry...this is going to be the most exciting time in your life...because you have a whole new future to look forward to.

Life is more comfortable when everything is laid out for you and planned. However, life is supposed to be unexpected, and I'm confident that you'll do really well in whatever you get into.

I saw that you enjoy giving presentations, writing/blogging, leading workshops. This is the PERFECT time to get into this industry. The self-help sector is going to be the next big thing. For the last three years I worked in the self-help industry and made my living leading workshops, seminars, and blogging.

My advice to you would be two options.

Both would be: Take this time to explore yourself and what you want:

1. Do it in the u.s. by checking out groups such as meetup.com for self-help type groups such as "Secret: Law of Attraction" groups and such.

2. Take this time to travel: You'll learn so much about what you want. I was making really good money, but when I took a vacation to thailand, I ended up moving here and making my money blogging/writing from the beach.

Sounds like you could start putting together some interesting career fairs for scared, new college grads rights away. There is money in the events business if you do it right. I made about $17,000 on a real estate investing event I did a couple years ago. Had I not spent about $15,000 in the production of it I would have made out alright. I reverse engineered it afterwards and figured out how I could have put the event together for about $2,000.00. Start with the cheapest space you can find. Invite employers for a very cheap booth fee, invite candidates in free (basically you want booths to cover the cost of the space). Set up your resume writing booth with maybe a half dozen commission only writers strategically near the front offering a 5-10 dollar emergency resume evaluation and maybe another 5-10 dollars for a 15 minute re-write. Do some good marketing to play on their fears of not getting hired WHILE giving them a good product that will help them. Make some money there, but more importantly with all the attendees to the event - GET THEIR INFORMATION and use it to make a client list of people who will need resume services after the show. When the show is over and they didn't get hired, do follow up marketing playing on their fears again WHILE giving them a good product that will help them and telling them how much they need to have their resume rewritten and offer them the service again.

Now here's where you go online. You have a customer list from your event. You can parlay the information you created from an onsite show into an online resume writing business and/or career coaching business and it hits everything you listed that you love.

When the economy eventually turns around, and you still have those job seekers' resumes on file, you can start a recruiting firm and get paid to place them in jobs.

It is the same case for me : I studied and followed a pre determined path that lead me to over worked job, and if I hadn't been fired, that would have been like that forever. I was fired of my current job (fired but I had unconsciously wished for it all the way through... so I just got what I wanted) because of passion.

That's where I m aiming now with my first muse : doing something that I m passionnate about. I will be moving back with my parents, I hadn't been living at their place since a lot of years and this is a bit of a shock. But the opportunity is great : now I have the chance to work on what I am passionnate about.

See the chance that you have of getting this new start ! New opportunities and the chance to rewrite everything from scratch, the way you want and the way you like. List all your interests and things that you are passionnate about and the idea will come from that list.
