You have it backwards. You need to test it before you do the hard work.

While I agree to a certain extent, you need a DESIGN to test.
I'm looking for a designer myself...

Nope. Pay a graphic designer $20 to make a drawing.

As usual the truth is somewhere in between. I would like a 'fashion' designer to come up with the design - while you suggest a 'graphic' designer.
By contracting a fashion designer I'm a little closer to my goal of getting the product made if it tests out, plus they might know things about design etc. that a graphic designer has no idea about (since THAT is what they do).
Thing is: The product I am thinking about as my muse, I am dying to own myself! So even if this thing goes downhill. I would love to own 3 or 10 myself (even if they are just prototypes). :D

The reasons for a graphic designer are to get a picture to use on a web site. That is your best option for actually testing your idea.
If you aren't sure about the viability to that extent, and just want one of your own, there are thousands of options. That said, how to proceed really depends on what it is.
Sit back with a piece of paper and try and figure out what it is you want.
Do you want a piece of clothes for your self?
Do you want a successful muse?
Do you want design advice?
Not that all goals are mutually exclusive, but there is a saying in Japan: If you chase two rabbits at the same time you catch neither. Each question is going to give you a different answer. Establish your priorities, set a goal, then do it.

Mark,
I work for a design company. I have done some design work myself. I know LOTS of designers.
My problem is that I know mostly fashion designers and you mentioned (I think) athletic wear. However I also know makers of competitive skating and dancing clothes which must be both fashionable AND athletic.
So maybe I can help. Maybe you can help me too. I have an almost finished idea but I want to get it produced.
So - let's talk, either here or elsewhere. Maybe we can help each other.
And as for what the others were saying. Any artist can sketch your idea. What a good fashion designer can do is tell you how (and whether) it will work in real life using real fabrics. It's like getting an artist to draw a house or getting an architect to design the house.

Although you have a keen sense of the obvious, it is quite beside the point. How and whether an article of clothing will work, or having architectural designs for a house have no bearing on the most important aspect of your muse.

I'm intrigued kamakiri. How is it that my point is so irrelevant? I would think that knowing that an idea CAN work in real life would be an important part of the process.

Dude. I know you can read or you wouldn't be here. Go back and read what I posted.
Knowing that an idea can work is a forgone conclusion, but again, that is not the point.
