View Full Version : Paying someone to use their credentials

Hey, forum.

I've worked as a freelance writer for a couple years now, and I'd like to start flipping projects to others soon to get a feeling for outsourcing and to earn some profit. I recently read David Walsh's Source Control, and it increased my confidence about my ability to manage workers.

One issue that I've had working with the bidding websites in the past (Guru, eLance) is my lack of formal credentials. I chose to drop out of college a few years ago. I notice that companies and individual writers that have BAs and MAs tend to get a leg up on bids, regardless of their actual skill level.

Does anyone have experience paying someone for the use of their expertise signifiers? I want to find some bum Harvard/Yale grad on Craigslist, pay them $200 or so to utilize and verify their identity and educational background and just use them as a figurehead CEO.

Has anyone tried this before? Are there any potential problems with this approach (maybe clients will want to speak to Mr. Harvard)?

Hi JC, maybe you should consider more intelligent stealth marketing.

I think that there may be some professinal indemnity issues. I'm university-qualified as both an attorney and an architect ( although i run a town planning biz now) but I would never risk my PI insurance on someone else, especially someone who hadnt been though the same long years at uni.

sorry, just my opinion.

So, basically you're trying to build trust between you and your potential clients by misleading them immediately?

I would try Help A Reporter Out. HARO for short.

Its free and works well. I'm going to be on a few larger websites, blogs, and maybe a magazine:eek:

Oh, and I'm just a High School senior:rolleyes:
