Does anyone have any suggestions for places in Paris with power sockets and (preferably free) wifi which won't mind me sitting there for a couple hours?

Plenty of coffee places in Paris offert that, but you might have to reorder coffee/drink every now and then (I think the law is sthing about every 2 hours, but they might not apply this rule...).
Typical coffees or Mac Donalds/Starbucks do that sometimes.
Just check on the door or window it's usually written.

Rules and reality don't always meet up. Especially when the French are involved. Spending two hours with a single coffee in many places will work once, but they will make you unwelcome if you try to return.

Starbucks charges for wifi in Paris, and McDo, well, I just don't like it. The smell of grease gets to me.
When I was in Paris I used a Neuf wifi connection. Not free, but they have very good coverage and you don't need to deal with buying coffees you don't want.

Yes Neuf Telecom and Free do have public service in streets around the city. I think that you have to buy a card of some sort.
