I am thinking about creating some typing software for schools. I sorta want to make the program whether there is a market for it or not (since it will be beneficial to me in another way), but I figured it makes more sense to test and see what kind of interest/sales I can expect before I put a bunch of work into it.

So since my target market is schools in general (and really, only school at this point), does sending something like a postcard to the schools, which will direct them to a website, instead of trying an Adwords campaign make more sense? And has anyone done something like this with any success?

Go meet with the principal to see if she would even be interested. If it's a private school, your job will be 99% easier.

If not, proceed to your city Board of Education and ask them. Expect to have a demo of some sorts ready

I am a PDHPE and Computers Teacher in high schools and i can tell you we rarely use them and if we do there are so many free online typing games or typing programs packaged in with other products that i think you might be flogging dead wood. just my 2c worth

A quick check of googles external keyword tool shows very low volumes 1800 then 540 and down and low competition. Sure if you can find some demand in there go for it, but it doesnt strike me as a good one.
