I need some project management software. The ones for ad agencies are a bit bloated and pretty expensive.
There are open source solutions. And I've been googling and writing down.
I want to manage multiple communications projects from ads to radio to web changes. It would be nice to track the success, too. I'm finding it hard to get the latter feature.
I need web based so clients can login to see what's due and needs approval. I also want to employ a VA or assistant and he/she will need to login as well.
Basically, this would serve as a traffic manager so I can better manage my time and utilize more help from assistants.
I had a short look at what's on offer with drupal and found this thread:
http://drupal.org/node/55902
Did not read it through though...

Have you checked out Basecamp from 37signals??
http://www.basecamphq.com
It's based on a scalable pricing model so you only pay for how much you use and you can get started for free if you want to have a play around with it all.
Cheers

Oh cool. I downloaded a free one today that is open source just to see what I want and don't want. I think I might give that basecamp a go. I think it has a free trial.

Basecamp comes from a very good team of developers and although I haven't used it, when the need arrives I plan on it.

One cool *free* solution is Zoho... although it may be overkill... it's a complete CRM with task/project management capabilities. I say free -- that's for up to 3 users, but it is fully functional at that point. They have all sorts of online apps in their suite as well.
And no, I'm in no way an affiliate of the site.. just a user. :)
The crm is at http://crm.zoho.com and the other suite of apps is at http://www.zoho.com
I'd be curious to see what you all think of it.

I forgot about another great FREE project management app. When I was an IT Manager, I installed NetOffice on one of my linux servers for my staff to use. I tracked their progress on various tasks through it. It has a backend interface, as well as a customer facing one, if you need it.

You'll obviously have to have a server to plant it on. Enjoy.

I'm liking these suggestions. Thanks you guys. I'm not loving dotproject. It's not intuitive enough for my taste.

If you're still shopping, I've also been working on an online project management application. Not sure if it's exactly what you're looking for, but there's a fully functional free version to play around with. http://www.enleiten.com
If you're interested in trying out the group version that would give you the multiple logins, I can get in you into the beta if you mention you're one of the 4HWW'ers.
The delegation via email function might be useful if you're working with VA's.

really?.... have you tried time doctor time management software?
My team has just been asked to install and use it. This kind of software appears harsh. It tracks 100% of time worked, as well as www-sites like facebook.com. I'm kind-of pissed about using it. Is it legal in the USA to ask people to download this sort of software?

Basecamp is pretty much the defacto standard for agencies and the like.
If you're looking for something more 4HWW/automation-focused, see my video in this thread (http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/vBulletin/showthread.php?t=7736) and let me know what you think.
