It was just past 5pm EST in Manhattan, and I’d been on pins and needles all day.
The report was coming in any minute. All attempts to nap earlier, despite two hours of sleep, had failed. There would be no rest on this Wednesday.
Now, in the lobby of the ACE Hotel, a few friends — including my agent, Steve Hanselman, my assistant, Charlie Hoehn, and my brother from another mother, Chris — had gathered with me to drink champagne. No matter the outcome, it had been a hard-fought battle over three years. THREE YEARS. Hospitalizations, surgeries, you name it.
I stared at the floor, reciting the reasons why things could go right. Most of them were silly and superstitious. Then my internal devil’s advocate chimed in with the reasons other books would beat me: better retail placement, celebrity authors, dedicated TV shows, etc.
“It’s here.”
I looked up. Steve smiled and handed me his Blackberry:

#1: The 4-Hour Body…
The 4-Hour Body had hit #1 on The New York Times bestseller list, on the hardest list (Advice, How-To) during the hardest week of the year.
I was in shock for the rest of the evening.
THANK YOU
For the rest of the night, as my friends fed me shots, I thought back to 2007, when The 4-Hour Workweek was turned down by 26 out of 27 publishers.
Everything that I’ve experienced in the last three years is thanks to you. I learn more from you than I could ever teach.
Much more to come soon (including a detailed post-game analysis of the launch), but — for the time being — I’ll keep it simple: THANK YOU.
I love you all.
May you and yours have the most joyous of holidays. Now, I need to get to wine and chocolate with the family…
Merry Christmas! 2011 is going to be the best year yet for all of us!
Un abrazo grande,
Tim

Tim,
I came in and sat down at my desk today to notice not one, but TWO copies of The 4-Hour Body sitting beside me. My wife brought in the complimentary copies unbeknownst to me, and I am thoroughly excited. I can’t wait to begin the read.
Congratulations to hitting #1 SO SOON!!! Thanks a million, and I will keep my progress posted as I work through the book. Cheers, and Happy New Year to you and yours!
Sincerely,
Michael Tergerson

Good evening Tim and congrats with all of your success. I am looking forward to receiving my copy of The 4 Hour Body.
I have tried to access the link to received the free electronic version but to no avail, it keeps kicking me out.
Again, te deseo todo lo mejor en el ano nuevo. Soy Argentino!!

The book is a great read with lots of new ideas to work into my routine. With the wind chill, it’s 6 degrees here in Northwestern Wisconsin so I worked on firewood without a coat, with just jeans and a tee-shirt, on an empty stomach. Thanks Tim for the great idea.
Jeff — January 9th, 2011, 7:39 pm
Not really upset that you don’t have a 4hour body forum at your website, but upset that I spent 30 minutes stubbornly looking for something that didn’t exist (yet your book, and other print say it is a free bonus).
Tim Ferriss — January 9th, 2011, 8:19 pm
Hi Jeff,
The “forum” in this case is the blog you’re on. I’ll be setting up a better solution this week, I hope. Thanks for your patience.
Best,
Tim

I did the same thing. Is there a place to get some questioned answered in the meantime? I have been doing the 4 hour body thing for 14 days and have lost 15.5lbs so far. I have had 2 burning questions so far that I can’t find a good answer for yet. Maybe someone can point me in the right direction.
1. Is Ezekiel bread OK to eat on the slow card diet?
2. When looking at the supplements for the Geek to Freak workout, do you take all of those even on the days you do not lift?
Any advice would be appreciated.

You are welcome. The reason why you are #1 is because you have found a way to take that effort and struggle and pain, and turn it into something that can help others. That is priceless. Thank you Tim. Thank you for the best blood sugars I have seen in 5 years (Type I diabetic) and thank you for 5 pounds lost.

Congratulations. I knew with all the pre-marketing that you did early on that this would play out the way it did. You seem to have this down to a science.
What a great Christmas gift!

Thanks for the thanks, Tim, but truly – THANK YOU! Remember that we buy your books because they don’t only add value to us, but they enable us to then add value to others. Thank you for giving me (us) the ability to not only learn and improve from you, but also the ability to teach others what we just learned. Your content is accessible, achievable and observable, quickly, which allows us to turn around and share it with credibility because we achieved the promised results. THANK YOU.
Your content is helping me take my life back. Last friday, I was diagnosed with stage 2 hypertension. I have dropped at least 12 pounds since then with the slow carb diet and no real exercise to speak of. I plan to watch my doctors’ eyes bug out of his head when I show him what and how I made a change. Your content makes this possible. THANK YOU.
Merry Christmas

Congrats!! I bought 9 copies (sadly, after the land rush deals! Haha). After reading your blog post 4 months ago, I’ve lost 42 lbs and become freakishly strong. I’ll send you a video when i get to 10 pull-ups at 5-up/5-down (at 6 now!) hahaha. Working out an hour a week seems like cheating–but that’s the idea behind lifestyle design.
Thank you for your passion. It’s changed my life, and lit me up–I’ve got at least 20 friends on the program now.
Keep on keeping on. Take some time off. Have an extra cheat day. Your work is changing lives, and I’m proud to see you at the top of the list.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Kameron — December 24th, 2010, 9:31 pm
Great job tim…… only one problemo i bought the book and im in a dilemma because on your back cover it says how to add 150 pounds to your lifts in six months but it mentions barry ross program for deadlift then the squat then the bench but how are we supposed to fit all that into six months . . ?? would we be better off sticking with the 80/20 faleev …and it doesnt give any progression for barry ross’s program i would like to of seen more detail so i dont have to buy yet another book …..but the book is still awesome … i dont know how you keep your cool with the haters …. but breaking down criticism is what leads to new innovations .. so keep up good work …Happy Holidays
Tim Ferriss — December 26th, 2010, 12:24 pm
Hi Kameron!
Thanks for the comment. Here’s my suggestion: focus on one lift for 3-4 months, preferably deadlift. If bench, use Marty’s chapter. If squat, use Faleev’s system.
No need for a %-based progression with Barry Ross’s approach. Just increase the weights 10 lbs. or so per workout and you’ll get there!
Best of luck,
Tim

Tim, Great book! I have one question. I purchased the book through Audible, you mentioned a workout and diet that can be received by going on line and downloading the PDF. I’ve only found one place to click on that appears to be the page to go to but when I click on it I get a page from WUFOO that says: THIS FORM CANNOT BE READ BY THE PUBLIC. I contacted support it looks like I got an auto response that says: Are you reading a foreign version of The 4-Hour Workweek and having trouble entering the “reader-only” areas? Please use the password “live” and enjoy the tools. That was great but I have no idea where a readers only page is and don’t know what they’re talking about when they mention a foreign version. Sent a second email back explaining that and got the same response.
It would be nice if there were an obvious link to acquire the PDF’s. Just a suggestion.
Can someone direct me to, or send me the link to the PDF’s? You’ve got an amazing book that is highly motivating. Love it , love it! Great job!

Hey Tim
Congrats on 4HB
I started the SCD last week and I have to say its probably the only diet I have wanted to do, the book is a great read, and I am trying all your procedures ( cold showers blow my mind) my main concern is can SCD work for a 390lb man, and it isnt all muscle, right now my doctors estimates my BMI at 55. I cant even get him to approve me for a DEXA scan which is for some reason necessary in georgia. My doctor keeps pushing the gastric bypass, but seeing what my manager is going through, I know its not for me. any information from you or the other readers would help. I just need to know if this can be done with SCD.

Hi John,
It sounds like you need to find another doctor, potentially. I see no reason why the slow-carb diet wouldn’t work for you. It’s worked for bigger people, so I’d give it a shot. The science is solid, and the evidence from 1,000s of people is there.
Good luck!
Tim

HUH??But it’s pouring rain out and I WANT A COPY NOW!!! Several turns later appeared a rack burtsting with orange -”The Four Hour Workweek”, and there in the middle, one large and regal copy of the “The Four Hour Body”. “You’re in luck!!” she said and handed me MY copy. : )

You’ve made your own luck – and I doubt very much this will be the last title from you that hits #1! I wish you continued success.

Congrats Tim! Bought 3 copies, gave one away already, and I’ve been reading, taking notes and re-reading the relevant chapters for the past week. (The family and friends are getting sick of me talking about it, haha.)
I’m really loving the format. Most ‘diet’ / ‘fitness’ books and programs just say “Do this because I’m a guru and trust me it works” without much of the reasoning behind it. I find that condescending and difficult to buy into. With your book the message I get is more, “Here is something that I’ve tried, has been effective for many people, and here’s the science to back it up so you can make an informed decision.”
I have already adopted several of your recommedations for fat loss (including cold showers, Brrrrrr!) and I’m begining to see results. Thanks for everything and I wish you and yours all the best this Christmas!
¡Feliz Navidad Hermano!

So glad you posted this because I’ve been wondering if you hit your goal. It is super excellent to see you conquer such a worthy challenge. Ordered five copies myself during your awesome $4 million dollar land rush. Can’t wait for them to arrive. I know quite a few people whose lives have changed because of your first book. I’m looking forward to knowing a bunch of people whose lives have changed because of your second book.
It’s clear you inspire others because you inspire yourself.
Congratulations!

Thank you Tim, for a refreshing and enlightening book. Your matter of fact writing style, supported with science really speaks to me. I have been preaching you up to anyone that will listen. First binge tomorrow, and I have trepidations, but I’m also excited.
Congratulations, and thanks again.

Your book came out right at the end of my finals and just in time for me to spend a whole month experimenting. I’ll be damned if I’m not 10 pounds stronger by next semester.
Also, my prediction for your next book is the 4-hour brain/mind. I was surprised to not see a lot of information in this book on the plethora of memory, cognition, and skill-acquisition techniques that are prevalent on this blog and all over the web.
Angela Kühnel — December 25th, 2010, 1:17 am

Dear Tim,
Congratulations on your success! While sitting here with friends dininking wine and discussing your book, we wondered if you are planning on releasing any 4HB apps? It would be great to be able to download an app for the exercises for the gym ect. I have yet to finish the book but so far excellent content!
Cheers,
Heather
PS- Excuse my wine talking grammar.

Tim, I was initially a skeptic of your work and achievements, but the more I see it; you are just a bloody honest chap who gets what he aims for and is not ashamed to admit it. You are not going to cover it up with corporate/polite b.s. and initially it seems abrasive, but certainly not any more!
It’s brilliant to see your success and inspiring too.
Thanks for sharing and I’ve loved specific blog posts so much it’s on my direct list for friends (the learn a language one) as well as others. Cheers!

Tim,
I’m not going to thank you for losing 6 kg in less than two weeks, I did that myself.
I’m not going to thank you for having a more muscular body, I did that myself.
I’m not even going to thank you for getting rid of adrenal fatigue, I did that myself, too.
But man, you inspired me[1] SO much, you not only got me started actually *doing* stuff, but also gave me the inspiration and motivation to *keep* doing it! Thank you!
1st place on the NYT list? Well deserved!
[1] Not only do you write to inspire me, I also like the way you’ve thrown humour into the book.

Congratulations Tim! This is an awesome achievement. My 4HB goes everywhere with me and I’ve got my kettlebell ready for action (I’ve already recruited a friend to come along for the ride). Bring on the new year! Please keep up the hacking, you are my go to guy for all things outside the box. I regularly view your blog when I need a little inspiration or a reminder of how to get things done. Thank you. Wishing you a happy Christmas and prosperous New Year.

You worked your way onto the list. You deserve all the congrats. Please tackle EDUCATION (Mass Learning? Mass Teaching? Mass Education?) next. We need an upside-down approach to bring light to all the under-the-rug aspects of our system. Enjoying the book so far.
Doug Fullington — December 25th, 2010, 7:33 am
Congrats, Tim.
I finished reading the book the day after I got it! It is very well written and packed with good information. Unlike many of the other books below you on the best seller list, your book is well researched and documented.
You will inspire many people in the next year to make substantial changes in their health. Could you write some posts over the next few weeks about maintaining motivation? I am also interested in your idea about starting a forum. You have lots of raving fans.
Abha — December 25th, 2010, 7:35 am

Nick — December 25th, 2010, 7:43 am
A fine Xmas present, I guess?
Brian — December 25th, 2010, 7:48 am
First off, Congrats. I bought your book, and read almost the entire thing. Contrary to what you say in the intro, your entire book works together as a whole, and was even more helpful in the parts I might not have read had I heeded your advice to pick and choose what to read. You deserve # 1.
But have you thought of what this aggresive campain to reach number 1 the first week might have cost you? In terms of influence and credence, the slow cooking climb often succeeds more throughly in this rather well informed society instead of quick rises to fame.
All over amazon, and other places, people question the ethics of goading people into buying large quantities of books which will likely waste away unread. Don’t you think this will take a toll on this books long term sucess?
Tim Ferriss — December 26th, 2010, 11:55 am
Hi Brian,
Thanks for the kind words and fair question. Please see my response to this in another comment (perhaps on the launch day post?), but here’s the short version:
The big push for multiple copies sold less than 10K books in total, if my calculations are right. If we include all the copies of 4HB sold, including through unreported (for NYT) channels, it should be over 100K for that first week, so even without the push for multiple copies (something everyone from Seth Godin to Keith Ferrazzi have also done in various forms, usually related to books in lieu of payment for speaking engagements), the book won by virtue of single-copy sales.
The critics probably think the multiple copies had a big influence on hitting the list, which they did not. More to come soon.
Thanks!
Tim
EDU — December 26th, 2010, 3:29 pm
the short version of the answer is still too long for me to follow through… but I see you sold quite a bunch of books, buddie!! ^_^
WAY TO GO!!
un abrazo desde tu Buenos Aires querido.

Ryan — December 31st, 2010, 6:31 pm
The short version- I sold lots of single books not many multiple books. I rock. Now watch me conquer the world
I know Tim has never actually stated that last part but it is fairly accurate.

Congrats for your achievement!
Just a few question though: buying multiple books is not very environment friendly. Could you please let us know you position about nature, environment and the green stuff?
I bet that promoting your book too you more than 4 hours a week! Just a pun, but really, how do you apply your own formula in such case of high promotion and so on?
Last but not least, working 4 hours a week gives you lots of free time to support different causes. In that instance, I would like to make you aware of one that i am also promoting: Talents of Afghanistan (please see the link on my profile or you can Google it as well as i can’t post link here). Would you be ready to give 1 hour per week to help promote talented artists of Afghanistan?
Thank you and well done again!

Herzlichen Glückwunsch, Tim
Anne — December 25th, 2010, 8:55 am
This book is fantastic.
I am not a body builder or a competitive athlete by any means.
By the time I was about 20% of the way into this book, I already felt like I got my money’s worth out of it. Densely packed with facts, and down to earth -humorous at times- observations.
Gentlemen – if you like women, you need this book. You may think you don’t, but (unless you’ve been taken in hand by a very knowledgeable woman, or several) you do. I am talking about the Improving Sex section. The man knows what he is talking about. Read this book, get some love. Geeks too – you know the ladies secretly love ya!
Tim Ferriss, you are the 4-hour Mac Daddy!!! I’m sure you must have considered that as a possible title for this book!
I admire your chutzpah, your moxie, your awesome recklessness! Some people think outside the box, you continuously blow the roof off of it!
Well done.

As technologically advanced as we are today, it’s interesting to see that books still matter. And you were able to round us all up by putting it all into a book. As I read through the books, I see some of your previous blog posts in there. Your blog keeps us together. Please continue doing so. And the forum you were talking about, please don’t have too many of them. Keep us in 1 place, make it easy to find information and help each other out. Congrats Tim!

Tim,
Congratulations! I love your books. I read both of them over and over. I always talk about them and recommend them. Whenever I went to a bookstore the past couple weeks I’ve asked the cashier how 4HB has been selling that day! hahaha I feel like you’re me, just a couple steps ahead. So, of course, I’m all about your incredible success! You’re into everything that I’m into! You’re the poo, Tim! High Five. Keep doing the damn thing!

Thank YOU Tim for helping make a better ME!
Dave Huss — December 25th, 2010, 11:37 am
Tim you have transformed my life from average to awesome in less than a year.
You helped me:
Find out about Vibram FiveFingers – best damn footwear ever
Beat chronic sinusitis with neilmed saline rinse
Avoid a “real job”
Set up a successful muse business online
Travel the world
…
Live life on my terms.
After all you have done for me Tim, buying 3 books was the least I could do to help you out. I am excited to take on the next step of transforming my body.
Here’s to Tim Ferriss not accepting the word “impossible”.
You earned this Tim, congratulations.
Diane W — December 25th, 2010, 11:47 am
Great job. I bought one copy with the freebies because I couldn’t get a sense what was in it. I opened it this morning and now I would buy those additional copies for the 3x gifts, but sadly the promotion is over. How about bringing it back for 12 hours

I live in the UK and ordered my copy from Amazon.com, so a couple of weeks to read it yet. A great effort though and glad all your work has paid off.

Congratulations Tim and Happy Holidays!!!
There was never a doubt in my mind that you’d do it!
I just got back from Christmas with my family, where I gave my father his very own copy of The 4-Hour Body. Sharing the love, right? I’ll bet he’s reading it right now!
I’m excited as hell for January 1st when I’ll be beginning my quest to turn this 30 year body into a 4-Hour Body. Makes me feel younger just saying it!
Cheers my friend!

Tim, way to go! We got the book a week ago- and LOVE IT! I have long said- it is not the calories but the “WHAT” that we put in our bodies- but I could not figure out what- “WHAT” was the key. Thank you for breaking it down as only “Tim Ferriss” can!
I had just let my best friend borrow the 4HWW and I texted her right away when I opened the 4HB and she is super excited to also read it!
Thanks! and CONGRATS!!! I love seeing people my age being so montivated and getting things DONE! I feel like we are friends, and cheer for you as if we share wine often!

No, thank YOU for the amazing book!
I know some commenters in the past have asked why you feel the need to “beat” Guinness or Gladwell, as I have, but it finally hit me when watching your video with Leo Babauta when you said, “I can’t just do something, I need a specific target.” Having a specific, measurable target, even if it’s a vanity metric, makes things actionable.

You sure have become a success story and an inspiration to many with 4HWW and your recent sophomore effort. So congrats on that.
BUT… as you are not the type to rest on your laurels (hedonic adaptation is a bitch), I am guessing you already have more stuff planned.
So what’s the next project in the Ferriss pipeline? I’m sure I’m not the only one wondering.
I personally think your next book should be on hacking the mind. Basically all things skill acquisition, mind hacking, superhuman confidence, influence, etc.
4HWW: freeing us from wage-slavery (something commies have failed to deliver since the time of Karl Marx).
4HB: freeing us from the body of the prison, something Man has tried since the time of the Gnostics.
4 Hour Mind: freeing us from ignorance, meme-viruses, limiting beliefs and delivering enlightenment, daily “I know Kung Fu!” moments, and superhuman powers of mentation. Also teaching you how to get laid like Tim Ferriss by hacking your inner game.
Thoughts?
Tim Ferriss — December 26th, 2010, 12:06 pm
Hahaha… good question. To be honest, I’m not sure what the next project is, as I can’t predict the doors that will open (or close) as a result of the new book. We shall see, and I’ll keep you all posted…
Happy holidays!

If I might make a small suggestion. I would like to see you do a book on how you go about breaking down any project, system or process into manageable components so you can master them in the smallest time possible. This is a fascinating field to me and I am sure that others would find it incredibly helpful. I have a book titled “Thinking in Systems” by Donella H. Meadows (as recommended by Eben Pagan) but I could not make the transition to real life very easily (it was a chore). Maybe my mind is not built for this kind of thing, but I am trying to get a grip on it. And considering that I like the way you explain things to the everyman, it makes sense to ask.

2 things-
1. Thanks for writing this book. I got it 4 days ago. The day after I got my bodpod measurements ( I’m 6′ 3″, 265 lbs, and am at 28.5% bf), and took my total inch measurements. Yesterday, I wrote up a slow carb meal plan, and am researching what weight kettle bells I should start off with. So Im not wasting any time with this. Congratulations, really. The 150 pages or so that I’m using has given me a few “OMG” moments already, like orange juice and iron? Holy Jeebus man. You exceeded my expectations, and I haven’t even gotten through a quarter of the book.
2. I get the feeling that you aren’t the type of person to disappear into anonymity and live a quiet life. Looking at ads online, it seems that everyone can make your penis 4 inches longer or regrow your hair in a month, if at all. Real life suggests otherwise. Just putting it out there, but if anyone could crack one of those two modern ‘problems’ and put it out there openly and honestly, I’d think it was you. Figure that out, and it really would be becoming superhuman haha. Besides, you’ve already put pictures of vaginas in a bestselling book and got paid for it. I think you could pull it off.
Anyways Tim- happy holidays to you, your friends, and family. Thanks for helping me see through the matrix, I’m enjoying this very much.

On that note – 4 Hour Body for Women, please (???).
Tim, I’m right in the middle of reading your book on my Kindle. Still have many questions and joined the Facebook group/reading the blog and comments. Great stuff and I love the GA sections, especially. You deserve numero one.
Please, please do a follow up for women. You’ll have to get a female volunteer guinea pig (or several) for this one but if you can solve how to keep our boobs from sagging, why some women can breast feed and not have this problem, if you really can grow bigger boobs (or shrink them) naturally, how to grow hair longer than our supposed genetics lets us, etc. I’d go so far as to vote for you for president of the world…or buy several copies and give them to all my girlfriends.
You’re the best. Have a great New Year.

I was vegetarian most of my life
(as a child I sew a cow giving birth).
For years, I rationalize it.
Than it happen, your blog post:
The Science of Fat-Loss: Why a Calorie Isn’t Always a Calorie.
With a B12 count of 149 pg/ml, Dr. Eades book, it seemed, had to be read.
Despite reading his study and logically accepting all that it claims plus being a darwinista, I was still unable to get over the mental hurdle of eating animals.
Almost two years latter you published the
release date of 4HB, I than declared:
by Xmas day
(I’m an Israeli wtf? Eat, drink, and be merry!),
I’ll set my Animal instinct free and bite the damn beast. This meant months of mental preparation and vomiting in my mouth a few times.
Fact is that you’re my highest authority on body maters, I trust you, and do as you say.
(please spare me the:
I’m not an M.D, I know, I know!!!)
Today at 6pm a pattern was interfered: I eat the best barbecue I’ve ever had (not so challenging) and it was delic!!!
So, in the name of my Father my Mom and the holy Beast I thank you from the bottom of my gut.
Shak
Kelli — January 11th, 2011, 6:01 pm
Man… I was so bummed when I read your comment. I hope you will reconsider your position and come back to vegetarianism – especially if you really feel that connection to animals. Of course, no judgment or anything… this is a very personal choice and respect that 100%. If you need proof to come back, and haven’t read The China Study… give it a try too. As much as I’m certain that Tim appreciates your devotion to him as “your highest authority,” he doesn’t seem like the kind of person who would want you to compromise yourself for the sake of following his book to the letter. I will personally be modifying Tim’s findings on diet to fit my veg lifestyle (won’t be perfect, but will be perfect for ME).
Casey — December 25th, 2010, 6:00 pm

Tim, congrats man. Good on you for changing people’s lives.
My dad’s been a bit overweight for a while, and I gave him my advance copy of your book so he could hopefully make a change. He told me yesterday his doctor said he was risking diabetes (which is scary for my mom and us kids), so he’s motivated.
He’s been trying to change his diet some of the more basic things, and is about to start PAGG when I get my supply in. To make it easier on me and him, I was going to divide the pills up in tiny bags he could take after meals and at bedtime. The idea is he could keep them in his pocket and wouldn’t have to worry about dividing up pills, just down a bunch after meals like a mint and the one with policosanol at bedtime.
I’m not trying to sell stuff here, but my next thought, and his, was that this could be a second muse. People could sign up on a subscription basis, get the pills delivered in the pre-divided bags and then just down them after meals and at bedtime to lose weight. I figure it’d totally increase compliance, and hopefully make money. I bought the domain and will build the site next week. I know you’ve got bigger stuff going on, but I’d totally donate 5% of any profits I make to you or a charity you endorse for doing the life changing research and as a thank you, no time investment required.
As a side note: I was also the 23 year old kid who asked what to do with my life and about the micro venture capital firm for muses in one of those hour long teleconference things. I’ve decided to apply to Stanford Business School and possibly UT Austin so I can learn to commercialize new technologies (making the future more widely distributed). If I get in, really hope to change the world.
Peace, and thanks for the inspiration,
Sean West

At the risk of being “Debbie Downer,” why the obsession with ranking? Why not just write an authentic book and let it speak to those who are receptive to it?
Tim Ferriss — December 26th, 2010, 12:04 pm
Hi Michael,
No problem at all — it’s a good questions. Real quickly:
1) I wrote the book authentically, so check there. Marketing can get a first round of customers, but product keeps customers and has the greatest impact, of course.
2) If my goal is to do the greatest good for the greatest # of people, the ranking is important, as it determines how wide the distribution becomes (all the resellers, etc. use the rankings to plan this).
Since there are 600K books — so I’ve heard — published per year in the US, it’s not a good move to simply count on the cream rising to the top. It very seldom happens. Most of my favorite books, the best written, have never been bestsellers or reached the masses, because the authors simply didn’t care about marketing. Since I’m fairly good at the marketing piece, I see no reason why I shouldn’t push to get it into as many hands as possible… assuming the product is the best it can be.
Hope that helps!
Tim
Michael Whitener — December 26th, 2010, 5:17 pm
Thanks for the thoughtful response! I should add that I’m loving the book, so no issue here on the authenticity question.

I have been with you all the way my man! Ever since you changed my approach to business with 4-Hour Work Week I have been following and eagerly awaiting your book. I got my copies in the mail yesterday (great timing!).
Like a child I woke up at 5AM on Christmas day and started in.
I finished the book at 7PM amidst all the Christmas day festivities. Family was asking what I was doing standing at the couch reading with the book on the back of the couch.
I have stretched my hip flexors and even performed a little ART on my wife’s infraspinatus.
Three people got this book for Christmas this year from me.
I want to say that after 15 years of being a personal trainer and strength coach and coaching in the NFL and other amazing opportunities, I have never seen such a written document that exposes so many truths.
This industry has changed drastically over the last 7 years with Gray Cook(corrective exercise), Mark Verstegen(REM sleep for recovery), Total Immersion(swimming), paleo Diet(Diet of course), Metabolic Conditioning(Cross Fit), and ART….MAT and other soft tissue methods.
People simply need to get the message! I have researched and studied exhaustively to get ahead of the competition and to help my clients.
This book sums up the best of the best in terms of methodology, progressions, procedures, and programming.
Save yourself thousands of hours and dollars in research and make this your reference manual for all things human.
We make decisions in life based on PAIN and PLEASURE…….this book will take away the pain and create much pleasure. You will be able to kick the other guys XXX in the next endeavor as well!

Kudos, Amigo ~ Hope you had a wonderful Christmas; great way to ring in the New Year! Although I already knew we’d clash on the feeding philosophy, without a distinction made between high fat raw vegans and the low-fat version recommended by Dr. Doug Graham in “The 80/10/10 Diet,” I was looking forward to reading the results of your studies in all areas of physiology and you delivered! Still humble and engaging after all these years ~ I had to make myself stop reading my Kindle copy straight through and go back to the TOC per your instructions! Still bouncing around and engrossed in the content.
As for the radiation issue, I’ll have to ask how cells compare to the dosage my husband receives as a nuke. He gets an annual report having workedin the field (military and private industry) as an operator and instrument tech for over 30 years.
Rarely carries a cell on the job; doesn’t own a personal phone, and never had a problem with sperm count or sexual gratification (at least not with me, the 2nd wife; btw, where’s the ‘O’ section on French kissing and breast stimulation?
That would explain the nine kids we’ve raised together (plus one from his 1st marriage) in the past 25 years. We started out in our mid-twenties, and the kids range in age from 4-24, naturally spaced an average of 2.5-3 years apart through ecological breastfeeding, just to give you an idea of the timeline.
One more note: Doc Graham and his wife are both long-term (Doug for over 30 years) raw vegans, and had no problem conceiving after marriage. They were both in their late forties/early fifties at the time. I had THE easiest birth of my life the first year I went raw (so quick I went solo before hubby could make it home from work!) Thankfully, I was prepared. You should check out Laura Shanley’s articles on “Orgasmic Birth” on her Freebirth site, and pass it along to the lucky woman who gets your “swimmies.”
Here’s to the most successful and ecstatic of New Years!! Love ya’ ~

N.B. Hubby’s a Master Marathoner (30 years of running under his belt,) high carb advocate for most of that time, and not the least bit interested in becoming a raw vegan like his wife… yet
Thought that would be useful for your continuing research & experimentation. I know this is a work in progress like 4HWW!
Been heavily engaged in Callanetics Teacher Certification and setting up new classes this year, which accounts for my absence during the 4HB pre-publication phase. Callan Pinckney agrees with your “Less is more” conclusions and proved it herself back in the 70′s and 80′s with her book/video, “10 Years Younger in 10 Hours” (perpetually an Amazon best-seller!)
Callan also maintains her fantastic figure on just one hour/week, even into her retirement years, which is part of what first drew me to the program! You’d love what she has to say about the importance of the Pelvic Floor, both inside _and_ outside of the bedroom

Kevin McColloch — December 25th, 2010, 11:38 pm
Tim,
I should call you because you are not a supporter of email’s but getting your phone number isn’t probably the easiest thing. I was hoping you could help me out with a issue I have. I a young professional beach volleyball player who has to deal with very harsh conditions. I am a jump server, run to the net to full time block, and I get 90% of the serves meaning that I have to jump out of the sand an average of 200 times a game. Mix that in with a potential of 5 games a day with 30 – 45 minutes of break in between. And that’s day one of a two or three day tournament. potential of 3000 jumps out of the sand in a weekend. Not to mention I have a 8ft 1in in reach which is ridiculously small for a full time blocker, I would say the average reach for a blocker is 8ft 6in… luckily I jump well.
1.) What do you think would be the most efficient way to train for those conditions?
2.) What should I eat the day of and in-between matches?
3.) What should I eat or be supplementing myself with after the day to recover fully before waking the next day and doing it all over?
I don’t know if you can answer these questions but I can collect a bunch of data for you guys if need be?
Thanks,
Kevin McColloch

Hi Kevin,
What are your approaches to these three now, and are they failing you?
Best,
Tim
Kevin McColloch — January 11th, 2011, 5:17 pm
Tim,
Hey sorry it took a while to get back to you I was overwhelmed with the number of emails I got back from follow up comments.
Anyway to answer your questions:
1.) What do you think would be the most efficient way to train for those conditions?
My workouts in the past few years have changed and changed again.
I have done Egoscue semi religiously for the past 5 years with a instructor who happens to be my current roommates mother. Liba Placek she has been teaching Egoscue for the past 30 years or something ridiculous. I also have workout programs from my partner last year who is a CHEK and Poliquin certified guy and he has shown me the right forms for lifting. A lot of power lifting stuff maximum recovery. I feel like a pretty explosive athlete but I struggle on day two or end of day 1. I loose inches on my jump and heat on my shoulder. I use my explosiveness a lot in my game and if I don’t have that pop my game goes downhill. I am doing your prehab program right now on top of my egoscue and playing twice a week. Everything is about to get more intense as my season is quickly approaching.
2.)What should I eat the day of and in-between matches?
This I have experimented a lot with and almost fainted because of it. I have drank 10 shots of expresso I actually did really well in that tournament but it was a 1 day tourney I tried it again and couldn’t move day two. I have attempted to make a lemonade diet drink…(master cleanse) and just sip on that all day, honey packets, no food just shit ton of water, carb up (terrible, felt heavy all day), I do best when I am on the no white diet but still I can’t recover and be fresh day two… I am starting to practice pretty religiously again and I will start recording what I eat before practice days see if i can find anything.
3) What should I eat or be supplementing myself with after the day to recover fully before waking the next day and doing it all over?
the only supplements I have been taking is: a F’ load of water, a big dinner usually veggies and meat, glutimine, and BCAA’s ( throughout day)
Anyway your thoughts are much appreciated…
Thanks,
Kevin

Congrats! You have the talent, developed the skills, and and followed through with all the grueling work to make this happen. But more than anything your that cool kind of guy that who can win friends, and whose friends go all out to support him. This is a victory for a lot of people!
I’m curious if you’ve already come up with a special way to include everyone in the celebration:)
Yoichi — December 26th, 2010, 3:45 am
Dear Tim Ferriss,
Thank you for “The 4 Hour Workweek” – Its the exact lifestyle I’ve always wanted. Now that you’ve written the bible for it, it gave me the courage to take action and trust myself and my intuition.
Then comes this huge book “The 4-Hour Body” in the mail the other day from Barnes and Noble. Didn’t expect it to be this huge. But very cool looking cover.
Its dangerous because I can’t put that book down once I begin to read. So much interesting things to read.
You are one cool dude.

Thanks again.

CONGRATS TIM!!
ONE QUICK QUESTION.
I just fished the 4 Hour Workweek and am super inspired to create a muse and start generating income.
Here’s the problem: I’m 17, almost 18 years old.
Do you have any tips on increasing credibility, or using my age to my advantage?
I loved your book. Thanks so much.
Logan

A big congratulations on reaching #1 – I also appreciate the two copies you sent. We are also looking to use your book as part of our corporate fitness challenge starting in Jan. Thank you and have a Happy, Healthy, Holiday Season!

I’m sure that this is just me missing the obvious, but can someone tell me how to access the bonus information from 4 Hour Body? I am especially interested in the discussion of the China Study. Sorry for being dense/luddite-ish
Tim Ferriss — December 26th, 2010, 11:08 am
Coming soon!
Ding_Pug — December 26th, 2010, 1:32 pm
Tim,
Thanks much for the reply – I look forward to the bonus material and hearing about how your marathon running experience worked out. For what it’s worth, my doctor suggested the China Study plan (about 95% vegan) to me for my high cholesterol. I tried it for a few months and hated it (obviously, it’s very restrictive) – also, my cholesterol didnt go down. I then actually read the study – I’m not an MD, but I know a thing or two about statistical studies and this one had issues. Afterward, I simply bumped up my vegetable intake and took some polycosonal and my LDL went down 50 points (my triglicerides also went down).

yep bonus material…bring it…can’t wait…all of it…
Danny — December 30th, 2010, 1:58 pm
And one more thing…complementing your obsession with productivity. Some methods to kill a few birds with one stone.
1. Combing cold showers with prehab exercises. Excellent way to increase shower length and save time doing “the boring prehab stuff”. Exercises include 1 leg squats, (not prescirbed in 4 hr body) normal squats and various hip flexor stretches.
2. Boiling eggs. takes 14 minutes to boil an egg (starting with cold water) which is the perfect window to tidy the house/get ready for work (usually this takes around 30 for me) racing the clock 14 minutes is plenty!
Cheers for the book(s). Awesome read.
TTTimo — January 15th, 2011, 12:03 am
Will it be good to include a link or placeholder page on the 4 Hour Body website to indicate that the bonus material is coming soon?
Unless it is for specific psychological/administrative reasons, it would be nice for us readers to have something to look forward to, instead of wondering where the message boards/links are.

I know it has been said a bazillion times already, but congrats man. Even though I am almost 10 years your senior, you still inspire me to greater heights and fantastic realizations. While there is no point of “arrival” in life, I suspect that at the end of your long life, you will be a very contented man.
Rick — December 26th, 2010, 9:21 am
For your next book can you take on aging? Do we have to get old? Why do some people die of “natural causes” at 80, and others live to 120? Losing weight and being strong and having free time is great, but the clock is ticking, how do we slow it down? stop it? reverse it?
If anyone could answer those questions with some out of the box thinking and credibility, Mr. Ferris, I think it would be you.

I would just love to buy this e-book. But due to idiotic territorial rights, I can’t. I am in South Africa. I have the following options:
1) Rip the book. (Don’t want to do this).
2) Rip the book and pay you direct. Am keen to explore this possibility. Would you consider a donation via paypal to pay for the book? If the publishers are so flippin’ dumb that they can’t get with the current times, then that is their problem. I would love to simply pay you direct anyway……
3) Pay you direct up-front, and have you send me the e-book direct.
I can’t find a way around the territorial thing. I am not willing to not read the book either.
Hope you can help!

You should do it with your husband, it would make it way easier
it’s already pretty easy to be honest.
I started on the 21st and I’m down 1.5kg (3.3pounds) despite the cheat day + the huge Christmas dinner. I’ll have the same issue with New Year, then I’m rolling. I should have chosen Friday as my cheat day instead of Monday, at least for the first 2 weeks

Huge congratulations!!! Well deserved in every way. I chuckled at the Barefoot Contessa’s second place ranking. Perhaps some of your buyers also bought her book for sinfully delicious recipes on binge day. And no doubt some of her readers bought (or least should buy!!) your book for advice on how to minimize the impact of those treats. I see some marketing synergies.

Hey Tim,
I bought your book on Amazon on friday Dec 17th. But the PDF, she no work!
Tim Ferriss — December 28th, 2010, 7:03 pm
Hmmm… that’s odd. Please keep an eye on your inbox. I’ll check it out.
Skrabichewski — December 29th, 2010, 8:05 am
I was waiting for the book to come out for two months and ordered an audio book from iTunes for almost $28 (Hardcopy sells for $14 on Amazon). To my great disappointment, not only audio version is heavily abridged to the point of missing any cohesive information flow but (as you would expect with a heavily packed informational volume) it doesn’t come with any PDF files (even though one is specifically promised by the narrator).
I would expect that for paying double the price ($28 vs $14 for a “dead tree” version) I would ALSO get a full version of the book in PDF as a quick searchable reference. I know this version exists and I know it doesn’t cost anything to the author OR the publisher to include it with the audio files.
Now I have to track the PDF with BitTorrent and download it ILLEGALLY because, sorry Tim, I am not paying ANOTHER $20 to get the same information in a different digital form when I already paid 2X for a badly butchered narration. I would greatly appreciate a full PDF version e-mailed to me at no cost, so I don’t have to break the law. I need it badly, because it is impossible to write a detailed review in my blog read by 1200+ people without having reference to digital text.
I am not trying to be rude here, but fair is fair – I love the information, but the delivery in audio format is below of the usual Tim’s standards of excellency.
Thank you in advance. Skrabichewski

Tim,
Congrats on the success of the book, well deserved and the content is great! I’ve already gotten several friends to buy the book
I’ve been trying to find a message board or forum to ask questions about the content in the book but haven’t found one yet. Is there a plan to create a message board for discussion?
One question in particular was about PAGG, In that chapter, you mention that if you are taking PAGG that one should also take Vitamin B complex. I’ve been trying to figure out what this does? I take a daily multi-vitamin (Optimum Nutrition Optimen) that includes vitamin B in it, does this mean that I don’t need to take additional? (includes Vitamin B6 – 50mg, B12 – 100mcg
Bravo — December 29th, 2010, 11:50 am
I also can’t find the message board mentioned in the book. Please keep us posted if there is one up already, or one in development. Thank you.

Tim Ferriss — December 28th, 2010, 7:01 pm
Thank you for your comment, Henok. Please work with your doctor, as your need for insulin could decrease over time on this diet. DO NOT stop taking your insulin, of course, but if you’re insulin sensitivity improves, you might need to work with your doctor to decrease the dosages.
Best wishes,
Tim

Tim,
The weird thing is that after starting the slow carb diet, I feel a lot better. I live in rural Thailand right now as a Peace Corps Volunteer. It’s customary to eat rice 3x a day out here. I cut the rice and other carbs out and I’m no longer sleepy/tired at 10am after eating rice at 8am. It’s a good feeling.

I am having trouble sleeping so I was reading the book and I am excited now that I now have something to use my $800 Flex Spending on before it disappears on dec 31. It looks like the test you talk about are eligible for FSA!

Hi there Tim,
I’m an 18 year old college student that just picked up both your books (your blog post was really effective!) I realize what your first book wants people to achieve is what I’ve been imagining for quite some time in regards to my own life. However the biggest question, that I imagine you couldn’t possibly answer in the book is; how to find the people to go on these adventures with you?. I noticed in one section you suggest asking a friend to join you on a trip, and to make reservations whether or not the join you. That got me thinking, do you do most of your travels alone? Do you make friends along the way? Do you happen to have close friends that have invested in a similar life style to yours? Personally I imagine it being one of the most difficult things in the world to get someone important to you to go on a trip with you, but having a great friend with you on your travels must be such a comfort! I understand this sort of question might not be the kind that is answerable, or that could be simplified so that it could be applied to everyone’s life, if it is I’d still like to hear about your personal experience with this issue.

Tim (I’m so sorry, this is long).
Saturday was binge day (day 7 of 30), wanting to lose those 5 kg that had been there forever, I used Damage Control: Twice that day, I did 30 reps of air squats. Life was good.
At the end of the day I set down to write on my computer desk. After 6 hours or so, I could barely stand up, my knees, it seemed where about to explode, it was painful!
The background:
On December/09 I had a CT scane in my lower back with the expected findings of bulging disk,
L3-4, L4-5, L5-S. I made a study, and went on with my life (dance and yoga).
From June to October of 2010, It may be fair to say, I over did it:
Intense Samba no pé (samba on toes- high heels) workshop, performing, HARD core yoga, gym, and working of my feet for long hours (working hard not smart). I was high on endorphins.
A week before I had to get on the plain and go back home I started feeling some pain in them knees (my lower back is always hurting me), by the time I left, it got very painful.
For the next 3 month I was VERY inactive for varies reasons, none of which has to do with my physical condition.
“Miraculously” all pains disappeared!
On my crusade to becoming Angelina Jolie (I made it up BEFORE 4HB came out) day 5 of 30 I took a Pilates class, day 6 I jogged, day 7 air squats and BAMM.
Now 48 hours latter it hurts (knees, back and neck) ONLY upon waking up and when I sit.
Today I planned to start practicing Occam’s protocol (it’s becoming Angelina Jolie we’re talking about). and I’m not sure this is the brightest thing…
What to do? Please advice.
Thanks
Shak
Tim Ferriss — December 28th, 2010, 6:58 pm
Hi Shak,
PLEASE see a doctor. I believe you are doing too much too soon. If you have serious back problems (as it appears you do), you need to have a good orthopedist or spine specialist evaluate you before jumping into exercise.
I hope that helps!

Hi Tim
Bought two books for me (preordered and then couldn’t wait, bought the first day!) and bought two books as gifts for others. Read the whole thing over Christmas… as a former NFL player, you were spot on with so many things I was taught or figured out, but have offered so much more I did not know! Thanks, and thanks for your accessible writing style!
I had a question: there is brief mention on Chia seeds but no details on it. Having read Born to Run, I was wondering your view? Same goes for DHEA supplements. Thanks!
Tim Ferriss — December 28th, 2010, 6:56 pm
I think Chia are overhyped, but they’re delicious when put in shakes. Gives cold shakes a cookies and cream texture.

Btw, went to see if you really ran 50km but it says “coming soon”…
How soon are you going to put up all the extra stuff on the other website?
My copy came in four days ago and I’ve been lugging it around in my purse everywhere I go. THAT is a workout in itself.
Great book – I’ve already gifted it to four other people since Christmas.
BB — December 27th, 2010, 7:52 am
So I’m dying to know – who won the TWO contests to promote the book????
I’ve been sticking to the diet (with Christmas Eve as my free day), and still haven’t lost anything beyond the 3 pounds on day two. It’ll be interesting to see if I hit my goal of 5 pounds by NYE. FWIW, the hormonal timing is not good for seeing day-by-day progress in the past week anyway, so I’m still holding out hope for Friday.
So far the diet has been pretty sustainable. When I tried low carb, I went seriously hypoglycemic within 36 hours and could barely stand. With this slow carb plan, I’m fine as long as I get enough beans. Lots of beans. No headaches, no lethargy, no hunger. But I have dreamed a couple of times that I “accidentally” ate a bunch of sweets.

Message to tim.
I have a contact for the radio talk show at KERA in Dallas(THINK). I was going to email the producer. Do you have some links I can suggest for Jeff or what is the link for media package. I am out of town on someone elses computer and can go searching around. Thanks diane

Over a thousand comments within a few weeks. What is the secret? I also have a book and picked upon a few tactics you describe a few blogs ago, soft selling, skype interviews etc. I just want to know “can you teach me how to swim”? I did everything I could think of for as promotions, blog reviews. I only had one TV request, a few radio interviews. Maybe you tell me what I am not doing.
I know that 2 people cannot dip in the same pond twice not trying to be exactly like you. But you seem to have a larger connection than me.
Sarah Niss — December 27th, 2010, 9:32 am
Tim,
Congratulations on the big success!
I pre-ordered the book and am so glad I did. Thank you for the signed copy. So many friends already knew about and were asking Santa for the book that I was already carrying around and just started reading and following. I was impressed to enter a conversation with a close co-worker regarding your book; I had no idea they also follow you.
One quick question: I’m on day 2 of the new slow-protein diet. My breakfast today was: 2 organic eggs, pinto beans, asparagus and plain Trader Joes Turkey Bacon with a bit of green salsa on top. I would like to know if the Trader Joes Soy Churizo (so flavorful and good) is an okay option to substitute in for the Turkey Bacon.
Thanks for your time and energy.
Un Abrazo,
Sarah Niss
Tim Ferriss — December 28th, 2010, 6:55 pm
Thanks, Sarah! I’d avoid soy like the plague. Please read the appendix chapters on “Meatless Machine” to understand why. I wouldn’t wish soy side-effects upon my worst enemies.
Good luck — sounds like a great breakfast!
Tim
Laura — January 5th, 2011, 10:04 am
Tim… quick question… what would you recommend a vegan to do? I’ve just upped the beans and nuts and things for protein, but I’ve been eating a good bit of tofu. I just can’t do eggs and such, but will cut out the tofu if soy isn’t a great idea. More nuts and peanut butter for me! Any other suggestions?
Brett — December 27th, 2010, 9:32 am
The world has many things to offer. There are a many areas of interests, hobbies, etc. You have showed me that taking inventory of my gifts and abilities and then using that as a filter to determine what paths I should take to success is the easiest route to accomplishment. You once used the analogy of your skills as a basketball player and how you realized that you are best suited for heavy lifting and activities of that sort. You could spend 10 hrs. per day trying to perfect basketball but you would go further spending two hours per day pursuing other activities that line up well with what you were hard wired to do. You’ve done that and the result is this. Congrats on your success Tim.
Benjamin Spall — December 27th, 2010, 11:14 am
Massive Congratulations Tim. I read this post on my phone in bed in the wee hours of Christmas morning. What a great start to the day!
Can’t wait for the book to land on my doormat (in the UK). I’ve learnt tonnes from you so far and I look forward to learning tonnes more.
Muchas gracias, Benjamin.

P.S. Since reading your first blog, about 4 months back, I’ve lost total 8 lbs fat, gained 5 lbs muscle. Who knows how far I can go now with new “Human Body Manual” you’ve created for us!

Great news, Tim! I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the book and have been trying to apply your section on your father to my own father (55, series of heart problems (heart attacks) and stomach problems), who could really benefit from your suggestions and tactics. My mother, who found the book off-putting at first, may actually end-up being the root to getting to my father who out of simple enjoyment in your writing style seems to actually have taken on to some of the science!
As an aside, I’ve also managed to get a handful of friends into the book — having bought them copies for Christmas didn’t hurt either!
Congratulations and well deserved!

I think this should quiet any detractors. Those that question the methods defined in 4HWW or 4HB should take notice, and give it a shot before they ask another question.
3 days after receiving my copy of 4HWW and 4HB, I successfully negotiated working remotely (even if just for this week), and Ive already had my first cold exposure too. You sir are a maniac, and I love IT!

Hi Tim,
I got your book before Christmas and I carried it through the Atlanta airport the day after Christmas (delayed flights). I had the opportunity to talk about it briefly with the airport security folks (they rescanned my baggage for a forgotten water bottle). The purple cover is great for marketing! My son saw it in the bookstore there also. It weighs almost 4 pounds but I was able to start the diet today and it was well worth the extra weight in my carryon! Thanks!
Doc Kane — December 29th, 2010, 10:38 am
Re: the purple cover, my nieces were nearby the computer this weekend when my brother was watching the book trailer and said: “Daddy, that’s you’re book!” when it was on the screen. He’s had the book for two days, and they’re three years old.
Charlie — December 27th, 2010, 12:39 pm
First off congratulations on hitting #1!
One thing that has been confusing me as I read the book: How does the slow-carb diet factor into the muscle gaining section of the book?
At one point you mention that the diet you recommend for putting on muscle/building strength is almost identical to the slow carb diet, but in other parts you mention Neil eating carb-rich meals and others trying a GOMAD to put on muscle faster. Does this mean white carbs and dairy are okay if strength building and muscle gain are my primary goals?
Tim Ferriss — December 28th, 2010, 6:45 pm
I’d still avoid most white carbs, but I will tend to consume more grains like quinoa or durum macaroni. That said, many paleo folks have gained mass successfully with a paleo (or, in our case, slow-carb) approach plus milk.
PR — December 29th, 2010, 1:52 pm
I have almost exactly the same question Just got the book…amazing read it in 2 days now (even though was supposed to be a buffet) Just one question for anyone who might have insight (Tim your insight might help too) The slow carb diet has starches only being consumed after a workout like those in Occams Protocol. However in Occams protocol chapter it says feeding with this workout should have a grain in non shake meals. Contradiction? I know we should focus on one goal but since both of these chapters are mentioned in the others I figured they could be done in unison. If i follow slow carb and use occams protocol without the grains (unless workout) will it be sufficient nutrition for muscle growth?

Hey Tim,
I just got your book for Christmas and am so impressed. I have had such a hard time losing the last 4% of body fat and feel that the changes you suggest to your book will be really helpful. I do have one quick question. Almost every diet I have done consists of 6 meals in order to keep your metabolism up. I have noticed that your diet has only 3 meals. What is the reasoning for this I have never seen a diet structured with 3 meals?
Thank you!

Michael H — December 27th, 2010, 5:11 pm
Tim,
I’m really enjoying the book and am planning on implementing your plan in a few days.
I have a couple questions that I couldn’t find answers to:
1. On the slow-carb diet, you say no to artifical sweeteners — what about a little bit of stevia/truvia, as they are natural?
2. What about protein shakes on the slow-carb diet? (I have previously used Muscle Milk Light)
3. I plan to work on losing fat and building muscle at the same time, and your chapters on that speak to a noticeably different diet (i.e., GOMAD is definitely incompatible with a no-dairy slow-carb diet) — my best guess is that I should focus on fat loss first with a strict slow-carb diet, then alter the diet once I’ve experienced the desired fat loss and can focus more on muscle gain.
Basically as a fairly fit 5’11″ 180 lb guy, I just want to do a little of both and am not sure what approach to take as both your fat loss and muscle gain techniques seem to be geared toward people looking for massive change as opposed to people already somewhat close to their goals.
Thanks so much!
-Michael
Chase — January 6th, 2011, 10:13 pm
I’m a month into the Slow Carb Diet and I’m switching to the Occam’s protocol diet this week. I lost 10 lbs over the last month and since, according to the book, on Occam’s Protocol diet you are expected to gain fat along with muscle, I suggest you slim down first with the Slow Carb Diet first. That way, when you gain a couple, you’re still in good shape and just have muscle added. You can always shred the extra fat by going back on the Slow Carb Diet again afterwards.
Holly — December 27th, 2010, 6:25 pm
You worked hard and you DESERVE the success you are seeing. Congrats!

Congratulations dude! I missed the December 14th cutoff, but subsequently bought 2 hardcopies as gifts for X-Mas after loving the Kindle version myself. I think it will really help my brother reach his body related goals after nearly a decade and a half of lifting. I also really enjoyed the Neil Strauss and Brad Feld mentions in the book. I can’t wait to see what you do next.
Happy new year!
Tim Spell — December 27th, 2010, 7:01 pm
Hi Tim – Loved FHWW and just bought and read 4 hour body (well, most of it).
Here is the story: I have an awkward body type. I’m 6’3, 200 lbs…around 18% body fat. I’m tall, lanky but have a gut that won’t go away. I rowed in college and ran marathons after that (was 6’3, 175)…no luck…still ‘skinny fat’. I started lifting 2 years ago and put on some muscle weight…but still have the same 18% body fat. I would love to stay around 200 but have it be solid…
Question: What is the best approach for losing that gut, not losing my existing muscle mass and continuing to get stronger? Is this possible or should I focus on losing my gut first, then putting on lean muscle mass?
It seems like, after reading your book, that I should go on the slow-carb diet and do the 3 day per week split with kettleballs, incline DB etc… Should I disregard the chapters on ‘putting on 35lbs of muscle’ until I get down to ~10% bodyfat?
Tim Ferriss — December 28th, 2010, 6:39 pm
Yes on everything in the last paragraph. You have the right approach.

curious as to how to consume the butter fat (aside from cooking eggs in it). it says you should take that along with the cod liver oil twice a day.

Thank YOU Tim!
I tried the Geek To Freak test back when I read 4HWW in 07′ and was totally surprised by the results! I’ve since followed everything in the 4HWW and managed to cut out of my seemingly endless 9 to 5 corporate job, doubling my income in the first year of running my own business fulltime. I now work from a laptop and will be moving to the beach (my dream) in the next few months.
I trust your advice and love your writing style which is simple and direct while maintaining total interest. I look forward to finishing 4HB (page 290), re-reading 4HWW (just bought the extended edition) for the fourth time.
Your foray into your personal obsessions has provided a clean and concise compendium of things for me to obsess over as well. The results in my life have been wonderful and I can’t thank you enough.
Congratulations on the 2 for 2 score against the naysaying publishers. Quick question, are you planning on working towards a 3 for 3?
Count me in on the pre-orders if so!
God bless my friend!

No Tim, Thank YOU!! Your book is AWESOME. I got it for my Kindle the very day it came out (I was too impatient to wait for the hard copy version)…I’ve read and re-read it, and I’ve gotta say you’ve nailed it! If people read and DO what it says in your book, taking into account individual needs and such…it will be a real force for change. Revolutionary!

Tim, just finished reading your new book and thoroughly enjoyed it. One thing I was looking for that didn’t find an answer to is a flexibility question. I’ve always wanted to do the splits and have come pretty close on several occasions but could never really get to the Van Damme level. I would love to know the MED to achieving full side splits and front splits with a quick achievable routine. Thanks

Hey Tim,
Quick question: Am I missing a section of the book on Lucid dreaming? You mention the intro guide at the end of your sleep chapter as an extra read, but I didn’t see any experimentation from you with it. Lucid dreaming was discussed on an earlier post a long time ago as a subject for the book, so I just wanted to see if that was something that couldn’t fit in or is on bonus material online.
Cheers, and congrats on a great work.

Congrats, Tim!
The book is fantastic. You deserve to celebrate.
I’ve read a lot of diet, exercise, and supplement books over the years, and your book is now on my short list of go-to references. I think it’s the quickest book to ever make it there. I’ve only had it a little over a week, and haven’t completely finished it because I keep rereading the sections I’m particularly interested in (good suggestion by the way), but I’m thoroughly enjoying your recommendations and the explanations that accompany them. I’ve already started to put some of your ideas into practice, and I have to say I like what I see so far.
As a pharmacologist by training, I take a pretty hard look at my supplements and tend to do my own personal experimentation. I was very impressed with your evaluation of some of the supplements you recommend. Most people seem to either stick with what has been studied in the scientific literature or go with whatever website of the month has been telling them about the next miracle supplement. It’s few and far between that I’ve seen people rationally choose their supplements (alone and in combination) based on sound physiology and their individual needs and then put their money where their mouth is and actually put it to the test.
Your book is one of the most straight forward and practical books I have seen in a long time. The hard work and diligence that you put into developing the content for the book really shows through, and your easy to follow and enjoyable writing style will make this a tremendously useful book for anyone that reads it.
Thank you for giving us such a great book, Tim! I look forward to seeing where you take us next.
Best wishes,
Bob

Tim, congrats on the #1. In my opinion, you definitely deserve it.
I’m on my second day of slow-carb (and buying the parts for the improvised kettle-bell this week) and I wanted to mention that your idea of the weekly binge is something I came up with, on my own, a few years ago. In your book you mention taking Alpha Lipoic Acid 30 minutes before a meal. Then you list 300mg. In this particular instance are you saying 300 mg total for the day or 300 mg per dose maybe up to 3 doses per day?
Thanks for the help.

Tim Ferriss — December 28th, 2010, 5:50 pm
100-300mg prior or with each meal.
Zach D — December 28th, 2010, 5:55 pm
Tim-
I’ve already taken so much from you.
With the Four Hour Body slow-carb diet, I’ve lost 7 lbs in 2 weeks. That’s a lot considering I wasn’t that heavy before and worked out 6 days a week. I’m eating more food (both in sheer volume and calories) working out WAY less (twice a week) and at the gym for shorter durations, and feel a thousand times better. I’m calling it the “Look Good Naked Diet”.
With the Four Hour Work Week (although maybe not your intent) you opened my eyes to how badly I need a “mini-retirement” and major change of lifestyle. I love my work (I already work from home), but can’t stand the quantity (65+ hours behind my laptop a week is driving me to sheer insanity). As a result I will be disappearing into the woods for a quick 5 month hike up the Appalachian Trail this. 4HWW was honestly the final nudge to get me to take action.
So how brash would it be for me to ask for more?
I intend on turning the experience into a book. It’s not going to be some personal journey (talking about myself would be as interesting to the average reader as CSPAN is to a child), but instead a sign of the times. Technology is literally forcing me into the woods. I don’t camp. Go figure.
You speak in the 4HWW of how important it is to have a mentor. I was wondering how many Karma points I could offer you to help an aspiring 25-year-old author with some advice. A 5 minute conversation would make the next 5 years of my life head in a very different (exciting) direction.
What I can offer is a promise to pay forward all that I’ve already received from you.
(Wishing upon an altruistic star)
Much appreciation,
Zach

Hey Tim,
I know you are into keeping your body fit and using supplements and trying to stay healthy, as am I. I noticed that you have recently started losing your hair, I am in my early twenties and am beginning to do the same. I was wondering if you experimented with any methods to keep your hair healthy and stem your hair loss (natural or otherwise) or looked into it at all. Did you just roll with it and shave immediately?

Tim –
Just finished reading the book, and it’s been fantastic! It’s been hard figuring out how to fit all these changes in my life – I wanna do it all!
I was having issues figuring out how to eat the 30 grams of protein right when I wake up (plus ice water of course) due to having to be up at 6 for PT, but I am now looking into polyphasic sleep and see that it’s quite possible (the Siesta would be best for me, with a full day of school and all). Thanks for opening my eyes and allowing me to live just a little healthier!

I’ve decided to definitely start with the creatine and glutamine. I will begin PAGG as well, after my 5 day loading period of glutamine as I would prefer my system to load up on these and assimilate them properly before I begin PAGG, which I will use the minimum doses, since I’m only 100lbs.
I will do this for a couple of weeks and then depending on my muscle gains, I will possibly add LOMAD (Liter of Milk a Day) if I can handle it, I’ll use 1% milk, and then possibly the protein shake that Tim suggests on Page 207 in the OCCAM’S Protocol chapter.
I’m also doing the Slow Carb Diet, with my extra calories coming from adding a starch to my non-shake meals, as Tim suggests on Page 206.
I’ve purchased a 30 pound kettleball and will be doing the kettleball workout described in the Building the Perfect Posterior chapter on Page 158, the plank exercises on Page 179, and the Geek to Freak workout on Page 187. Pics of cute Tim performing the Geek to Freak workout begin on 198.
I’ll keep you posted on my progress, Brook (or anyone else) you can email me at jlynnbright@gmail.com if you would like to be in better communication, it can be difficult to find the info you need on the message board at times.
Please let me know if anyone has comments, advice, questions, etc.
Wish me luck!!!
xo Jessica

Congradulations Tim, I know you worked very hard on it. So fair I have just concentrated on the the first couple sections. I then put the book down and got to work. I think for the first time I will actually stick with my workout routine until i reach my goals. Thank you for sharing what has worked for you. I look fwd to sending you before and after photos!

Congrats Tim – you deserve it. And thanks for having the b***s to publish quality info. I’m sure you’ll rub a few people up the wrong way – but that’s half the fun. I love where your work is leading.
And yes – may 2011 be amazing!

Hi Tim,
Merry Christmas and congrats on reaping the rewards of such a tremendous effort.
Question:
In the PAGG stack (pp 114-120) you mention taking 200 mg of garlic per dose and then the bottle you now recommend is 350 mg. Also, you write that you take 325 mg of decaf green tea extract, but your recommended one is 725 mg of lightly caffeinated pills. Are you taking a hire dosage of these two now (post publishing) and do you recommend these higher dosages for others?
I am officially starting my body retransformation on Saturday and am super stoked.
Thanks!
Ravi

Hey Tim,
I’ve read the book! Love it.
One question that I’ve been keen on asking you is:
How do you go from liking a startup to being involved?
Cheers from Iceland,

Tim,
Congrats on the great success of the book so far! This is just the beginning of what doors will open for you.
In regards to your PAGG supplements, you mention that it’s important to take Vitamin B complex but I can’t seem to find the reasons or the dosages needed.
I take a multi-vitamin (Optimen Multivitamin), it contains B6 50mg & B12 500mcg. Is this sufficient or should I be taking something else? I also tried to figure out what Vitamin B does to support the PAGG. It seems to aid metabolism and liver function but the majority of B vitamins are water soluble. Can you please advise?

Hi Tim,
I ordered the 4Hr Body thru the Appsumo package. I’ve still been waiting for my book, but Appsumo says they shipped it long time back. I have no way to track where the book is.
I was really looking forward to reading the book.
It’s just disappointing that I didn’t order it thru Amazon and bought it thru Appsumo (when you tweeted the link).
Can you help please?
Thanks…

Hi Shishir,
I’ll forward this note to AppSumo right now.
So sorry for any confusion!

Luke Jackson — December 29th, 2010, 8:22 am
Tim:
I appreciate all of your work, authentic research and accessible format.
I have learned through extensive research (Atkins, Eades, Cordain, et. al.) that there is a linear relationship between net carb intake and body weight; the more carbs we eat the more weight we gain…..period.
Because I am super-sensitive to carbs, I have eaten a SUPER LOW carb diet (18-20 net gerams per DAY) for nearly 15 years.
Your slow carb protocol calls for “unlimited” beans. 1 cup of canned kidney beans (for example) has 24 NET carbs. That’s a lot of carbs if a person eats 3 cups per day (in addition to nuts, etc. for enhanced sexual performance).
(The EAS Myoplex Lite Nutrition Shakes your dad drinks has even higher net carbs!)
Won’t I and other carb sensitive types pack on weight (fat) by increasing carbs as you suggest?
Thanks!

Why does it take so long to post and (hopefully) answer this posting?
Tim Ferriss — January 9th, 2011, 1:53 am
just answered the other.
Tim Ferriss — January 9th, 2011, 1:53 am
Hi Luke,
Not in my experience. But, that said, if you have a diet that works for you, I’d continue on the low net-carb path. For 1000s of people who’ve tried it, though, the beans/legumes don’t wreak the destruction you’d expect.
Best,
Tim
Brad Green — December 29th, 2010, 8:56 am
Dear Tim,
I’m almost finished with the book…I love it! The question that has been on my mind is why do recommend the split workout from O.’s protocol and not the full body workout used in the 34 lb weight gain experiement? Is there something more to be said about success with a full body workout compaired to a split routine?
Thank you very much
Brad
Dave Anthony — December 29th, 2010, 9:34 am
Thanks & congratulations on your success. I’ve read about half the book so far (the parts that pertain to me!) and found it really interesting.
I just started the slow carb diet yesterday. I think this will be a pretty easy diet for me to follow — I already love beans and eggs! I have no problem cutting out bread and wheat, never really liked it that much any ways.
The hardest thing to give up will probably be the rice… saving fried rice for cheat day.
Dave Anthony — December 30th, 2010, 9:50 am
OK, starting day 2, and I realized that I broke one of the diet rules yesterday. For some reason I didn’t even blink at eating a lime despite the “no fruit” rule (I view lime as a condiment not a fruit…). Considering that a lime has only 1 gram of sugar, would you still exclude this while following the weight loss plan?
Brook — December 29th, 2010, 9:47 am

Tim,
I’m at pg. 77 in the book where you mention your iron leap from 71 to 191, and thought I’d share this little tidbit about us Irish sometimes having a genetic issue with clearing iron from our systems (hereditary hemochromatosis). It’s a interesting read, and, who knows, might be part of the reason for your leap. I think I recall reading a few times that you have Irish ancestry. Thought you’d find it intriguing if you weren’t aware.
Enjoying the book! Here is the link:

Just got the book…amazing read it in 2 days now (even though was supposed to be a buffet) Just one question for anyone who might have insight (Tim your insight might help too) The slow carb diet has starches only being consumed after a workout like those in Occams Protocol. However in Occams protocol chapter it says feeding with this workout should have a grain in non shake meals. Contradiction? Or if i follow slow carb and use occams protocol without the grains (unless workout) will it be sufficient nutrition for muscle growth?
Adam Stanecki — December 29th, 2010, 2:25 pm
Well done, Tim.

Got my TWO copies of your book on Christmas Day and started the slow-carb diet again that Sunday.
It feels much better the second time around (partially cause I started eating fish again which makes the protein easier). I can’t wait for cheat day but there is zero temptation, especially since I measured a 3-inch difference in my total body measurements.
I will keep you posted. You aren’t ready for the kind of love letter you will get if this works. It will scare you.

Hi Tim,
I’ve read that it’s good to eat more refined carbohydrates and lean protein as soon as possible following a workout (the idea being to get nutrients to your muscles for recovery as soon as possible). I know you have mentioned your post-workout pizza with chicken.
What types of foods do you recommend as good post-workout meals that work with the slow-carb diet?
Thanks!

Hi Tim,
I’d read the book and especially the fat-loss chapter. You mentioned Green tea supplement to help with the fat-loss and said that one of its benefit is accelerating fat cells apoptosis (fat-cell death). I wanted to know if you know about ways (other than this one) to destroy fat cells permanently and not just “emptying” them? Are long-term caloric restriction (with a slow carb diet) and intermittent fasting are good at this?
Also, I wanted to know if it’s ok to supplement with PAGG only on binge days (so one day per week) and just prior to big meals (on special occasions…) and if it still effective? And did you found that taking just two of these supplements (the green tea one and ALA) are still effective without the two others?
Thanks in advance
Robert LaSalle — December 29th, 2010, 7:20 pm
Tim,
Love both books. Before 4HB, one of my favorite “nutrition” books was “Nutrient Timing: The Future of Sports Nutrition” by John Ivy.
You obviously have insight on what to eat but did you’re data indicate WHEN particular nutrients (and supplements) should be ingested?
I see the guidelines for the PAGG (before meals and bed) but I didn’t see any other indications on if I should take all at once or spread the supplements out through the day or do quick exercises before taking the supplements would make absorption more efficient and effective (i.e. you say to take 4700+ mg of potassium per day, 1000+ mg of calcium, 400+ mg of magnesium but does your data indicate that timing matters). Thanks for the insight.

Troy — December 29th, 2010, 8:01 pm
Hello,
My name is Troy and recently I was informed that my testosterone was that of a 75 year old man (144) and I am only recently 30. This drop has caused me to go from 200lbs at 6’3 to 255lbs in under a year. I recently purchased the 4-hour body and intend to try the rapid fat loss in conjunction with the sex improvement portion. I am currently on medication to help me regain the natural flow of my testosterone but that has proven slow and variable at best. (up to 325ish over the last 3 months.) I work in a medical lab and have access to test myself at will so I was wondering if there was a place people can post their results and any progress they make. Keep doing what your doing… tonight me and the wife are trying the 15 minute female orgasm…. thanks in advance!

Tim, LOVING the book, but not loving the cream in my coffee. One question: why can we have cream with coffee but not milk? Is milk metabolized differently?

I received your book a few days ago, and I LOVE IT.
I intend to give your dietary regimen a try, at least for a few months. I will let you know how it goes, as well as posting comments on my own blog (“Slouching Toward Decrepitude” was intended to be wryly humorous, but the “gallows humor” aspect of it is becoming increasingly un-funny IRL). I am sure that my weight has at the very least *contributed* to (if not outright *caused*) the lower-limb lymphedema that I started to experience after hitting age fifty, so it will be interesting to see if/how dietary changes might affect this miserable condition!
Unlike yourself, I have absolutely no interest in elite-level athletics, although I’ve found those chapters to be interesting reading. However, I DO like the “less is more” approach, and I’ll give some of your suggestions a try. And it would’ve been a boon to have had the sex-life-improvement info, say, twenty years ago: I’ve little doubt that it would have made the good times even better than they were.
I’m so favorably-impressed that I’ve decided to also order your first book. Thank you!

Hi Tim! I bought your book a few days before Christmas, and it has totally changed my life. I was out buying gifts for other people and standing at the checkout, when I saw your book. I thumbed through it and read part of “Damage Control” while I was waiting, and I was hooked. I HAD to buy it immediately. I have battled my weight since I was a child and never could find the right formula to stay fit and enjoy life. I’ve alternated between 185 pounds and 113 pounds.. and could only stay thin if I popped ephedrine or other diet pills. I am currently 120 lbs and around 20% bodyfat – but I had not been enjoying myself and living life. I was doing chronic cardio and constantly restricting myself, and my loss had stalled for the last 6 weeks. I implemented “cheat day” and started doing the slow-carb diet and already I have lost 2 lbs in the past 4 days. I am so thrilled about the book and cannot stop reading and re-reading it. I’ve read countless “diet” books over the years, and this is BY FAR the best. I feel like I have a whole new lease on life and will recommend the book to everyone!!!

On getting cold – I am perplexed by this research and the results. People tend to put on weight in the winter when it is cold out. Also Eskimo/Inuit people and those who live in more northerly and colder climates tend to be heavier. Those who live in warm climates are thinner. Question for Tim (or anyone else who might have an idea) regarding reversing injuries:
I’ve had an issue for years where an almond-sized and shaped area on the surface of my kneecap hurts to the touch… bad. It’s a nerve-like pain; I jump when the seam of my jeans hits it, and I’m in the worst pain I’ve ever felt (and I’ve had severe dislocations and breaks) for about 3 minutes if I knock it on a table leg. After those few minutes, I’m completely back to normal and fine. I play sports and have no problems unless the spot is hit.
I’ve been to neurologists and orthopedic surgeons, had cortisone injections, MRIs… nothing works and no one knows what it is. The neurologist says it can’t be phantom pain because it’s too specific. The orthopedic surgeon said the cortisone shot would fix it, but it hurt just as bad immediately after the shot.
This may seem minor, but it really messes with my quality of life. If someone pats me on the knee in a crowded restaurant I’m on the ground writhing in pain helplessly while trying to reassure everyone I’ll be fine in a minute.
Tim and the people who follow this blog know some crazy, random tricks to help with injuries, so I’m hoping someone might have a clue as to what’s going on and how I might fix it. Thanks!

Tim, just as the 4HWW gave you permission to write the 4HB, the 4HB will give you permission to delve into hair loss and penis extension.

Book is excellent. Consuming it and taking notes like crazy (175pgs, 7 evernote notebooks and 2 days later…)
Noticed a small, insignificant error you’ll want to forward to your publisher though. On page 99, you discuss “MISTAKE #7: HITTING THE GYM TOO OFTEN”. This should be the eight mistake, not the seventh.
As I said, insignificant, but from what I can tell, something you’d want changed.

Tim, you always find very interesting topics to cover in your book. Very unique and unexplored. The 4 Hour Body book is really good but you know what would be even better – if you had your own cable show!
The topics that I’m reading about are fascinating but really hard /understand by just reading. For example, I’m reading about some of the doctors who helped take away your pain through locating the muscles/parts of the body that were actually out of balance. I’m reading the steps to get my body back in balance and find myself wishing that you had a 30 – 1 hour tv show that shows you interviewing some of these incredible experts, showing what they do, talking about the research, showing the before and after, etc.
Yes, I do know you have a few videos online that I can look at but I think with your interest in researching what really works, talking to experts in all sorts of areas and your experiments that you would have a hit show. I think of it as a combination of Mythbusters, Dirty Jobs, and Anthony Bordain’s No Reservations.
Anyway, I really hope you will consider it!
I do love the book but tv show would be awesome!

Question: Why is Ghee and Butter from grass fed cows allowed but not milk?
Long description: Tim, you recommend not to consume dairy products, but also mention using butter from Grass Fed Cows and Ghee. Could you please let us know why it is so.
Thanks,
Jay
Sue — January 4th, 2011, 7:00 pm
Milk produces a very high insulin response unlike the butter and ghee. Removing milk can stop fat loss stalls.

Tim,
Happy Holidays and congrats on the success of 4HB!
Love the book and nearly done highlighting from each chapter I find useful. Yes, I am telling close friends about the book, but more importantly, I have set up an Excel and Word doc, measuring and documenting exactly my progress. Since this is New Years Eve, I’ve set this as my first cheat day, but will not be going too crazy. This morning was day 3 of the Slow Carb diet, and no exercise, which will begin next week.
Results—day 1- 236lbs./33.5 bodyfat. day 2- 232.8/32.8 and finally today–229.4lbs./31.9% bodyfat! Not bad for only changing the diet! My goal is 15% bodyfat, and from there will tweak even more.
Thanks again Tim, as you are giving me hope to finally construct the body I’ve always thought to be out of hand.

Hi Tim,
BIG FAN!!
I’ve been reading your blog for a while, I have 4HWW and I just got 4HB and am half way through it (right now in the Orgasm section
Both Awesome!
I am on it! I have followed every single rule except that I have 2 equals with a cup of coffee in the morning and I have been putting a tbsp of heavy whipping cream as I used to add 7 equals and lots of cream.
I tried quitting coffee as I do not want to drink it plain, but I had massive headaches.
I started on Monday and have tracked every single thing I’ve eaten and I weighed in this morning and have not lost not even half a pound.
I am not discouraged, but I want to know your thoughts. I am more determined to keep going as I know it has only been a few days but I figured you have so many comments that it might take a while for you to respond (if you do)
I have already lost 50 pounds and have another 50 to go, I had started this slow carb diet from your blog but I was not being diligent enough as I was having some whole wheat bread in the AM.
The reason I mention this is that maybe my weight will be slow to come off?
Should I quit coffee? what do you recommend for the headaches if I do quit?
I really want to do this so I hope to hear back from you.
Thanks, Congratulations on all your success and Happy New Year!
Peter

My first cheat day after 5 days of slow carb. I’m shocked at how much less flavorful chocolate tastes. How little I’m interested in the frozen pizza that I was desperate for on Monday. This program seems like something that I would have to take good effort to fail with.
Congrats again on your #1. I hope the info in your book lasts through the ages.

Where is the “The China Study: A Well-Intentioned Critique” listed in the appendix of The 4 Hour Body under Bonus Material ? Since I just read The China Study, I’d love to read your critique.

Hi Tim,
There are a few hours until I too will step into the New Year so I thought I should come here and wish you all a Happy and Wonderful New Year! Congratulations on your dream completion Tim hope you get more of that in 2011.
I love you all let’s do our best in this newly born year *hugs-hugs*.

I just bought the ’4 hr body’ (love it) and it refers to bonus material in the back. I couldn’t find any resource or link for getting the bonus material. Please send me a link to that.
Also, I was really really….. really disappointed that your contests were over before I even knew about them, and I’d just now bought the book !
Please consider sending me a link for the contest gifts. (the download link for the other book)
Happy New Year and looking forward to hearing from you. (I already know everyone is busy, me too, but that is why we have all bought your book, right ?)

I appreciate all that Tim has done for all of us “Ferrissites,” in the way of influencing ideals about healthy living, but I particularly want to thank him, and all of you, for supporting public education. Tim sits on the National Advisory Council for DonorsChoose.org, a non-profit that helps put much needed resources in classrooms. Because of Tim’s support and the assistance of DC I am a much better person and educator, which in turn has changed the lives of many children and helped instill and inspire a love of learning in us all. Thank you so much Tim! May you all have many Ah Ha! moments in 2011!
Randal Wark — December 31st, 2010, 2:39 pm
First of all, I want to thank-you for the 4-hour workweek. Because of the outsourcing angle, I am able to spend most of the year living in Mexico (Bucerias near Puerto Vallarta) to be exact).
My wife and I have started the 4 hour body slow carb diet. Living in Mexico, getting beans (especially refried ones) is easy! I would like to know what you think of fresh Corn Tortillas. Is that OK? The taco’s on the street are amazing here! Come on down and I will treat you to Taco’s on the Street (bring Kevin Rose along also!) and red wine
Thanks Amigo.
Tim Ferriss — January 9th, 2011, 1:49 am
Nice spot, Randal! I’d skip the tortillas, if you can. It’s quite easy to make delicious slow-carb meals without them, and you can gorge on tacos on Saturday
Abrazo,
Tim
Larry — December 31st, 2010, 2:53 pm
Great work Tim! Although, after reading 4HWW I have no idea why I would be surprised.
I have one question (for now): When it comes to planning meals, you listed many kinds of legumes to form the bulk of the calories. I’m not fond of any of the kinds of beans listed. Would regular New England baked beans be an acceptable substitute? Or would the molasses and brown sugar/maple syrup disqualify them because of the carb count? I suspect that may be the case, but I’m hoping.
If not, what kinds of flavorings would you recommend to make plain beans palatable?
Larry Black
P.S. I haven’t yet had a breakthrough with a profitable muse, but I still visit the forum and re-read 4HWW once every couple months for inspiration.

Whoa.
I did some of those static hip flexor stretches this morning because I do spend a lot of time at my computer…
I usually take the stairs two at a time (in the hopes that it’ll hit my butt harder ;D) and realized today…it was WAY EASIER.
Happy New Year, EVERYONE!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR TIM & EVERYONE!!! Here is to a Total awesome body via 4 Hour Body, a totally awesome life via 4 Hour Work Week! Thank you Tim for being such a great mentor though we’ve never met. Meeting you would be so cool, THAT is on my bucket list of things to do for 2011!

Hey Tim,
I lost six pounds of fat in my first ten days without even adhering to the slow carb diet for a third of my meals. I can hardly imagine how much more progress I would have made if I had gone all the way. Now, it’s off to add some pounds of muscle without overworking myself, which I seem to like to do like most guys trying to gain muscle.
Thank you so much for the book, Tim. Congratulations on the #1 and best of luck in 2011!

How awesome it is to come across some new science, research and proof to aid our full time job of staying fit
Well done Tim, thanks a lot
However! Ive been eating healthy and exercising for the last 10 years or so and have brought my BF from around 33 into the high teens. I do tennis, yoga and gym twice a weeek
Since I got used to the 6 meal a day approach, I rely a lot on fruits and on oatmeal for diversification, particularly for one of my two breakfasts …. I was gutted when I read none of these are allowed.
Anyone faced a similar challenge?
When are the forums for the 4HB going to be up..?

Tim,
Congrats on the new book, muy chevere!!!
A close friend bought me 4HWW as a Christmas gift last year and my life hasn’t been the same since (in a good way of course!). Hoping to leave my “prestigious finance job” to launch a new venture in 2011 and while I always knew I wanted to make a major life change, your book made me ask myself what the hell I was waiting for.
I pre-bought 4HB for me and all my friends. Only a few chapters in, but very impressive so far, loving the Occam’s protocol chapters. Made it to the launch in NYC – man it was a packed house, glad it was a success.
Just wanted to say thank you for all your awesome work and continuing to push your curiosity and share your insight with us. Keep up the good work, and all the best in 2011!!
Keep on crushing it!

Tim – you are an inspiration. 2011 is all about the 4 hour body and work week for me. Just tried Samovar on Page Street – tired of reading about it on your various blogs and in your stories, and live so close, so I thought I’d try it. Loved it. Many, many thanks. Need to re-read quite a bit, but small steps for maximum effect….

Tim, I think it’s time you start nailing some of your groupies. A rockstar guru that doesn’t rake the shes like fallen leaves, bag the hags like trumped-up gags, gorge on throngs of thongs pouncin’ to join a groin doing money countin’ atop a mountain, well, some my think he’s a fruit.
Seriously, some of the head shots on here, mama mia, they give me a 4 minute hard-on.
And if you need to outsource the selection process to a reputable casting agent, of course I would humbly serve in said capacity, ensure a full and bountiful harvest in the forthcoming year. The accounting should go something like this…
8 for Tim, 2 for me… 2 for Tim… 8, for, me.
We are officers and gentlemen, lest we transform to magicians and scoundrels

Here’s a story that highlights the importance of reading Tim’s book and taking his personal experience of experimentation to heart.
Tim, I got your book about 2 weeks ago and read it cover to cover (well, the Kindle equivalent of this,
) And then I took notes on the fat loss areas and am starting to implement things now.
As a travelling physician who is 39 years old, I want to thank Tim for writing this book. So much of the traditional nutritional information we learn during our medical training is based on research performed 40 years ago. And unfortunately much of this “research” is tainted by methodological problems encouraged by the funding sources (the government and drug companies).
About 6 months ago I weighed 180 lbs; I presently weight 159 pounds due to daily walking (3-5 miles/day, averaging about 30-40 miles/week of walking) that I started 6 months ago. My waist circumference at the navel improved from 39 to 34.5. I reached 95% of these results within about 3 months of starting the walking, and the last 3 months have basically been in a plateau. Obviously all of this was before I read your book, which came out earlier this month.
My diet over the last 6 months has been protein (chicken, beef primarily), veggies, and 1-2 times a week eating whatever I want (hoagies, candy are personal favs). This includes daily breakfast with cereal & skim milk (i.e. daily dairy at breakfast time). No regular legumes.
Unfortunately over the last 6 months I was using an over-the-counter body impedance scale that I bought at Wal-Mart for $19 when I started walking 6 months ago. I say “unfortunately” because I measured my body fat with the scale weekly over the last 6 months and kept a log, and my log shows that my body fat % improved from 26% to 19% over the last 6 months.
Well, today I went and got a DEXA body composition study in San Jose. And what was my body fat by the DEXA? 37.1%. That’s right. I spent the last 6 months thinking that my body fat was improving from the mid 20′s into the high teen’s, and it turns out that AFTER all the walking I’ve done that my body fat % is actually in the obese category.
If you look at me, I am a not a fat-looking person. Like I said above, I’m 5’7″ and my waist is 34.5. Nevertheless, the DEXA doesn’t lie.
Initially today as I was driving back to my hotel in Livermore I was down in the dumps about my result. Then it occurred to me that when I was 179 with a waist of 39.0 6 months ago that my DEXA body fat % at that time probably would have been over 40%. So I realized that even though today’s number is a disappointment, it represents a BIG improvement over where I was 6 months ago. Plus, even though the number was wrong with the impedance scale, I was using a consistent method and that method was showing that my body fat % was improving. So I’m not as upset as I was initially with my DEXA result.
So where do I go from here with my new, accurate, real numbers thanks to the DEXA? First of all, I ordered complete labs on myself which were drawn yesterday. I am calling Spectracell on Monday to order the nutritional profile to complete my self-testing.
Next, I’ve set-up a new excel spreadsheet today to track my total inches on a weekly basis (not even bothering checking my weekly weight, the impedance scale is going in the garbage). I’m sticking to my original goals set 6 months ago of a body fat of 8% and a body weight of approximately 140 pounds. This means a goal composition of 11 lbs of fat and 124 lbs of muscle (my bones weigh 5.1 lbs, thank you DEXA
).
This means I have to lose about 46 pounds of fat and gain 27 pounds of muscle.
Some people reading my post probably think that my goals are uncompletely unrealistic. But I know that I can accomplish them. I can do anything that I set my mind to, and now that I have accurate information I’m dealing with reality instead of the land-of-make-believe (thank you DEXA and 4HB, no thank you to the body impedance scale).
So what did I do today? After returning to Livermore from my DEXA scan, I went shopping to start the slow-carb diet. Organic eggs, frozen spinach and other frozen vegetables, canned beans, chicken thighs and grass-fed beef from Trader Joe’s. Coffee beans and cassia cinnamon, and a spice grinder. No more cereal, no more dairy products, and no more fruit (sorry bananas but you have to go). Morton Lite salt. Sound familiar, 4HB’ers ??
I ordered Orbitape and a neck pad for cold compresses on Amazon today. Both will arrive within a week.
I’m going to the store on Sunday to buy supplements. Specifically daily Magnesium, calcium, PAGG, and B12. I bought my fermented food (canned sauercraut) today. Depending on my nutritional lab results and testosterone results, I’ll add supplements with Vitamin D and/or fermented cod liver oil/vitamin rich butter fat and Athletic Greens as recommended in 4HB.
If my ferritin comes back > 50, I’m going to start donating blood every couple of months.
I bought 35lb and 15lb kettlebells today so I can begin minimum effective dose bilateral kettlebell swings on Monday and Friday with bilateral swings at the smaller weight on Fridays. Will do the cat vomits on Monday and Friday as well. No more 35-40 mile walking per week for now, but I’ll consider a few 2-mile walks per week depending on my total inches results.
My showers in the AM are now cold showers (I started this a few days ago, and set up a 21-day email reminder with HabitForge for self-encouragement).
I’m going to binge on Sundays, so my weekly intermittent fast will begin with an early dinner on Saturdays.
Sorry for the long post. Good luck to everyone in achieving their goals. And thanks again to Tim for writing this book.

Great book…..interesting, fun to read and lots and lots of great insight.
I’m grappling with 2 Slow-Carb Diet rules:
1-Eat “as much as you want”. Portion control is my weak spot. There is no stopping me if I know I can eat without limit.
2-Eat beans at every meal. 8 ounces of cooked lentils per meal=36 net carbs. 36 net carbs x 4 meals (every 4 hours) = 144 net carbs per day. (Atkins would roll in his grave and Gary Taubes and Michael Eades, whom you quote in the book, would freak).
What am I missing?

The title is misleading you have to on a very strict regimented diet for 6 days of the week. I don’t see any four hours in that. As much as I loved the four hour work week, I felt this was a let down if you took the title seriously.
I have the Audio of the book from Audible but where id the PDF?

Tim,
Congratulations on hitting #1! Your book is incredible – I’ve been reading and re-reading it since the day it arrived!
I have one quick question about using muscle contraction to activate Glut-4 in order to direct nutrients to the muscle. I understand that this is an effective tool for binge days, but as someone who wants to gain muscle, would it make sense to do some form of this before every meal, so that nutrients are constantly being directed towards muscle?
Thank you for your help, and thank you so so much for your writing! Reading your work has caused a paradigm shift in some of my most basic assumptions.
Jane — January 1st, 2011, 2:46 pm
I am almost through reading the Kindle edition of the 4 Hour Body and although I am totally excited and extremely interested I have multiple questions and confusions. Perhaps this is because I do not have the hard copy in my hands, a fact I hope to remedy soon (living in rural Vermont does not allow easy and quick access to some items), but my mind is in a jumble as to where to begin and how in depth I should go with myself (i.e. just do diet and work out smarter or go all the way with supplements and ice baths)….I just have all these questions and need a simply lay-out in front of me to help me decide.

Tim:
OK – so I tried the cold shower this morning before breakfast and all I can say is ….
¡Carambolas!
That’s cold! I must really be a lightweight because about 60 secs into it after rinsing head and face and backing into the stream, I thought, “Why am I doing this again?” and backed out of it. What a whimp!
Is it really that hard to get used to it? Guess I’ll never make the Polar Bear Club, eh?

I just realized that I put in Super Cissus RX with ALA which is not correct. Tim mentions his experimentation with it on Page 110 “For those who can afford it, I believe CQ is very effective for minimizing unwanted fat gain while overfeeding. Until more human studies are done, I don’t plan on continuous use, but I will use it during 8-12 week growth cycles, on “off” days, or after joint sprains.” On the box it says: “For more immediate results, begin with a 14-21 day “loading phase” of three capsules, three times per day with meals…” Picture link on page 113. So I don’t know to include it or not as the box recommends, just on “off” days, or forget about it until my focus is on “preserving my abs”???

No problem, please note I made a huge error. The A in PAGG is not AKA SuperCissus RX, the two are not related.

Since no one seems to be answering questions or giving comments I will step up to the plate. It is very similar to what I am currently doing. One side effect to watch out for is how often you visit the loo. Not to be gross or anything, but the frequency will likely substantially increase. I’ve noticed this in my routine and it gets uncomfortable if you are not used to many more visits than say 4 times a day. My recommendation as a parent of two screaming meme kids a few years back is A&D ointment. You will thank me later.

Hey Tim,
I’m down 20 pounds since the book came out on kindle.
I’ve quit smoking
I’ve gained 5 pounds of muscle
I turned my office from a couch to a personal gym
I’m just rocking everything right now!
My family, my friends, they all bought your book, and at least 5 of them are on some veriety of change in their diet (protiene breakfast and no bread/juice for everyone) with big changes.
Can’t thank you enough, you seriously rock!
Your first book cut my work day from 7 days a week (designer, was invited to work at digg.com a while ago etc) to now only about 8 hours a week of focused work.
Thanks for making me money and saving me time, and inspiring me!
@Peter who posted above: Try just one or two espresso shots, with dark cinnamon (no cream and no equal)… it tastes like cream and sugar with the cinnamon, and by cutting it down to a shot or two you an slowly cut back and quit coffee. Also try a ton of dark green tea, that helps the headaches.

Dear Tim,
On December 29, I was ready to curse you. I was so demoralised by my ‘Before’ pictures I went to bed and moped with a box of flavoured crackers.
Today, I bless your genius 5’9″ person. I have just finished one of the best meals of my life – free-range Otway pork chop coated with a mix of rosemary, garlic, vinegar, mustard and oil, plus vegies and beans – made by ME.
I had forgotten how pork crackling, in particular, could induce moans of pleasure.
And I haven’t even got to the wonderful 2008 Giant Steps Harry’s Monster I’m drinking. Or the poached eggs on zucchini fritters with salted organic lentils that were this morning’s breakfast. I’m eating like a queen.
OR the fact that in four very imperfect days on this diet, I have lost more than a kilo.
Thank you. Thank YOU.

Crongatz dude.
Got my hands on it, finally.
Maybe one of your next books could be ” the 4 hour best-seller”
might take more time but you already got 2 case studies

Hey Tim. Great Book.
With all these questions you will have to do a webinar or a FAQ Section. There is a great FAQ plugin for WordPress called FAQ You where you could create a Slow Carb Diet FAQ. On your Sites. Your Outsourcers could manage the questions.
By the way you have inspired me to write my own Blog on my journey through your book and what I have learned. Called http://thehealthymonk.com it is a tribute to your work Tim.
I can’t wait to lose the weight and I know I will by using your book as a base. Cheers Tim and Happy New year.
Brian G — January 2nd, 2011, 12:18 pm
Congrats on the success (and well-orchestrated launch). I bought 3 copies, gave two away and finished reading mine yesterday. I took down a few questions as I read that I hope someone on your team could answer. I’m posting here as recommended on your contact page (since it won’t fit into 140 characters!):
1. Why recommend the KB swing only to shoulder height instead of going to the 12 o’clock overhead position (as most crossfit places suggest) which better engages the core? You can’t do as much weight but wouldn’t it be a better full-body version of the exercise in perfect posterior?
2. The book documents at least 3 or 4 times where you’ve gained 20+lbs of muscle. What caused you to lose it between each attempt? I’m wondering what it takes to maintain a 20# increase in lean muscle and if you lost it through slow degradation, a planned deload or if you “fell off the wagon”? You must have some clothing budget to accommodate those kinds of regular body changes!
3. In the Strength Gains section on pg 338-339, what portion of those gains are just getting better at *performing* an exercise? When any of us pick up a new skill, say jumping rope, we typically make radical gains in our first few attempts as we figure out the motor skills. The confidence in *performing* the move leads to quick initial gains. Your high-jump attempts on Pg 354 demonstrates correlation != cause where through specifically technique you make big gains over your starting number.
4. Flexibility is my nemesis and I was hoping to see some approaches in the book. My muscles are at a length for a body about 3″ shorter than I actually am. Any guerrilla programs or hacks for achieving great flexibility?
A little bit of errata:
1. On page 209 you state that 8 x 30 -> 5 x 60 on the overhead shoulder press is a 100% gain but in reality it’s more like 210# -> 300# or a ~50% gain. That’s like comparing a warm up set to a 5RM set… not very accurate if the reps aren’t the same. You use total weight moved in other places in the book so this stands out to me.
2. On page 369, it’s a myth that elevation has an impact on sobriety:
http://www.annals.org/content/122/12/925.abstract
http://www.faa.gov/library/reports/medical/oamtechreports/1970s/media/AM79-26.pdf
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3579819?ordinalpos=1&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum
Great book overall; I’m going to give a diet a try for the first time in my life (no longer using the exercise-as-grounds-to-eat-all-mexican-food-in-sight excuse) and see if I can finally put on some weight. My weight doesn’t fluctuate much so after a month I’ll see if I need to look into leaky gut syndrome. Thanks Tim!

Did you see the story about the 94-year-old guy who just fathered a child? (Yahoo News.) One of his diet “secrets?”–a POUND of almonds a day! (See the Four Hour Body, page 259.) Tim, I think you might be on to something!

wow! an amazing, amazing book! my heartfelt thank you for your innate curiosity and your willingness to share!
PS I’m betting on a resurgence for The 4 Hour Work Week too, because when it came out I thought “wow, now wouldn’t that be nice, to bad it’s not possible”…but after reading 4 Hour Body, I am compelled to go get 4 Hour Work Week and actually read it, this time
Wishing you a Healthy, Happy and Prosperous 2011!
Thanks again Tim, and Congrats to you!

Congratulations! I just finished reading 4HB and really enjoyed it. I learned a quite a few new things, confirmed some things I’ve experienced, and got inspired to conduct some of my own experiments in 2011.
Question: I could not find the Bonus Material mentioned at the back of 4HB on the 4HB website (I did not see any message boards). Could you or someone else point me to it? Thanks!

Hey Tim, my husband and I are reading the book like crazy- got our PAGG going and got the correct meals going in the house- I am wondering tho, about corn. I hear back and forth but I have searched the book and can not find where corn sits. I know it is higher in the sugar content than most veggies, but is it cool under veggies or a no-no… And what about corn based products- like corn chips? Hope you can help me out!
Jon L — January 2nd, 2011, 10:53 am
Tim,
Looks like my previous post got deleted.
If I pick the Irish Butter plus Cod Liver Oil option, how much Irish butter should I take, and how should I take it? Raw? Fried with my eggs? Rectally with my eggs?
Regarding Corn…. so it’s OK as long as it’s not made into a Tortilla?
Regarding Egg Yokes… in some portions of your book you mention that you eat egg whites with a single yoke for flavor…. then in other portions you imply that the yokes are healthy for you.
Regarding Butter and Cheese… you don’t specify to avoid these, but your suggested meals don’t ever include them, if I recall correctly.
Regarding the difference between slow-carb and Atkins Diet… I’ve gotten this question at least 10 times from people I’m telling about 4HB. Do you have a good way of explaining the differences since at least 50% of the people who might try Slow-Carb, probably at one point were doing Atkins?
I’m loving the book, by the way, and my friends and family desperately want for me to pick a new topic of conversation! It’s a very addicting set of topics!
Tim Ferriss — January 8th, 2011, 8:23 pm
Hi Jon,
See my last response as well. To the others:
- Corn — a little is OK, but keep it light.
- Whole eggs from good sources are fine.
- I’d avoid cheese
- Atkins focuses on excluding more carbs and also includes a lot of junk calories. I focus more on nutrient-dense calories that are higher fat/protein.
Best,
Tim

Wow Tim! That’s an extraordinary achievement, the kind I can (maybe) hope to achieve in the long-term future (if I’m lucky!).
Great place you’ve got here, all the best for 2011!
Take care:-)
Dingo_Pug — January 2nd, 2011, 11:47 am
I am thoroughly enjoying the 4HB book – it’s great. I am currently employing the slow carb diet and the geek to freak workout program (with kettleball swings). I haven’t lost weight yet (one week in), but I’m sure it will come in time. I feel great though and I’m making good progress on my other 4HB endeavor the bench press program. I’ll try to keep results posted on my Dingo_Pug twitter. In the meantime, some questions on the diet for fellow slow carb devotees:
What exactly is allowable on the meal after a resistance training session – is it just white carbs allowed or is this a free meal (e.g. sugars, etc.).
What about Fage yogurt? Ok?
This may sound odd, but cardio workout is ok w/ this diet right? I mean, I like running and some cardio workouts. I ask this b/c of the warnings not to workout too much on geek to freak directions.
What about cheeses? What kind are ok?`
Sam — January 2nd, 2011, 12:18 pm
Hey Tim! I saw your Skype video Q&A on another website. On this Q&A you mentioned that since the book you are sticking to a few of things mentioned. He didn’t ask the followup question that I wanted to know:
Now that the research is over, what is your workout/eating/supplement regimin?
Thanks for the great book!

Very interesting book so far Tim..I was in Barnes & Noble the other day looking for another book and for whatever reason I picked yours up and flipped through it, actually not expecting much (sorry) and I was pleasantly surprised..so I bought it. I had the great fortune of knowing Arthur Jones personally and training with Casey Viator in the past so I’m sure I’ll find those chapters extra interesting. Actually I’m violating one of your rules, I’m reading it cover to cover, I like to read and its a very interesting book in many ways, I have no hesitation in recommending it for many reasons. Best of luck in your endeavors.
Tim — January 3rd, 2011, 7:54 am
Hugely deserved – congratulations Tim.
I’m 3 (non-sequential) chapters down, 1 week into a slow-carb (+extra ‘good carbs’) muscle gain/fat loss diet and exercise program, tracking everything and loving watching the progress.
Thank you.

Hi Tim,
Congratulatuons. Really loving the book.
Trying to find the 4 Hour Body forum but I can only seem to find the “4 Hour Work Week” forum, which requires a password from that book. I own 4 Hour Body but not Work Week.
Apolgies if I am missing something obvious. Thanks in advance.

Do Garbanzo beans fit into the slow carb diet? I enjoy them. The book has a sidebar where it looks like they might be a negative, but I’m not sure.

Oh yeah, Lima beans too…

Less fat, weekly binges and improved sex. Thank you for making the world a better place.
Cheers, Carl
P.S. When microwaving refried beans for the Slow Carb Diet, be sure to put a paper towel over them. I learned the hard way. It was a messy experiment.

2 Questions:
1. The appeal to me is not being hungy all the time. Is there any need to monitor or control portions on this program?
2. Does anybody have experience with the Range of Motion (ROM) exercise device? I have wondered if it can live up to its claim of delivering a full workout in four minutes.
Nick — January 3rd, 2011, 11:24 am
Let me skip the congrats part, because I think it goes without saying. Fabulous, fabulous book. I started my Slow Carb diet two days ago and I’m down 1.8 lbs already!
I intend to follow the Slow Carb diet, PAGG, ice therapy, the Perfect Posterior, Six-Minute Abs and the testosterone long-term protocol. Too much?
I’m so excited!
I have some questions about the vitamin-rich butter / cod liver oil combination, though. I found the cod oil supplements, but what should I do with the butter? Are there any butter oil pills or is it enough to eat good-quality butter? How do you combine both, though? Is that compatible with the Slow Carb diet? Is it enough if I just take the cod liver oil without the butter? Thanks in advance!

Simply amazing, and clearly a result of the work you put into it. I researched it on Amazon before picking up a copy for myself and the amount of positive reviews are overwhelming. You simply can’t buy that kind of good feedback.
Congratulations.

Hey Tim,
Love the book. Saved me from the absolute boredom of returning to Kansas for the holidays. One question about a small element of the contents, though.
You say we should eat within an hour of reading. However, most other sites and opinions I have heard have said that cardio in the morning, when done on an empty stomach boosts your BMR for the rest of the day.
Should we attempt to pound out a half hour’s worth of cardio before eating in the morning, or will we burn more fat by just going ahead and eating? I’m at about %13.5 body fat right now, so maximization of fat loss is key for me.
Congrats on your most recent success!

Hi Tim,
When I returned from Christmas with family I decided to look for something interesting in way of fitness book (I have been a certified personal trainer for 28+ years) and found your book listed. As a fan of your other books, I knew this was what I had to buy and went straight to bookstore. LOVE IT!!!
I am a trainer who has always tried every ridiculous diet my clients brought me over the years (at 110 lbs and healthy, I did only try for a couple of weeks at a time). Some I felt and saw no difference, some I felt like crap – maybe worse, some had me actually putting on weight – they were that bad. So I totally understand testing things on your own body. I am about 100 pages into book – and this is with buying it yesterday and working my reading, highlighting, stickering around appts. Love it. Can’t say that enough and will absolutely be telling everyone.
True believer in the more protein and have been using that myself for past couple of years, especially with 1st meal of day.
Thanks!!!

Hey Tim,
Congrats on reaching #1. I know I am a few days late, but have been reading and applying. On day 8 of the slow carb approach, and feeling better than I have in years. Thank you again.

George,
I’m no expert, just another fellow trying to lose some weight, but let me tell you my take.
If you’re talking about the section on domino foods, I think (I thought when I read it) that Tim was referring to baked garbanzo beans, which can be snacked on like popcorn, and not to meals that include them as an ingredient. Google tells me that their glycemic index is a little lower that black beans. So you should be safe.
Hope this helps.

I love the book! I got it for Christmas and only started reading it a couple of nights ago, I was already planning on cooking lentils over the weekend, so I just added tons more to the pot and now I have lentils for the week!! I do have a question, maybe someone can help me with. I wake up at 5:30am to make breakfast for my daughter before school, and then I go back to bed at 6:30am til about 9am. Should I eat my breakfast between 5:30 and 6:30, or wait until 9am?? I started the menu yesterday and was starving this morning at 6am, but waited til later. My intuition says eat at 6am, what do you think??
Jason Horner — January 3rd, 2011, 3:33 pm
In the 4HB did Tim mean to state 200 micrograms (mcg) instead of 200 milligrams (mg) of Huperzine-A?
You notice that most pills of Huperzine-A are 50-200 mcg which would mean I would need to take 1000 of the 200 mcg pill in order to meet the stated 200 mg dose that Tim references. I know he can swallow 25 pills but probably not 1000, haha.
Cheers,
Jason
Tim Ferriss — January 9th, 2011, 12:50 am
Hi Jason,
Yes, this typo somehow got put in through editing.
It is definitely 200 MICROgrams (mcg).
Best,

Tim,
You really are an inspiration to all of us. I don’t want to be overly repetitive, but I can easily see through you that all my fear setting that 2011 is late to be getting on the boat is ridiculous.
This is going to be the best year yet for us all. Here’s to getting my husband home from a job that threatens his life most days and living long enough to still be enjoying one another 3 years from now (or longer if the Lord allows.) Thanks for your inspiration!!
Looking forward to this year’s challenges and successes!

Hi Tim,
I read the book and I hoped to find things about the “man boobs” problem. It seems that the surgery is the only solution but I wanted to ask you first and it will be very nice if you can give me your thoughts on it since I’ve found nothing yet and it’s a verry common problem among men and teens. I really want to get rid of it and I’m sure I’m not the only one…
Thanks in advance!

Bought the Kindle edition of your new book and enjoyed reading it over the holidays. I started the Slow Carb Diet Sunday and I am nearing the end of my second day. A little early to report any results but the following is a little narrative about my 2nd lunch on the diet.
I learned a valuable lesson today. This morning when I was thinking about what to take for lunch, I decided I wanted a high protein, low carb, high potassium lunch. With this in mind I opened the cabinet and found a can of salmon and a can of black beans. Since I was running late I didn’t want to take the time to put them in separate containers. I reasoned that since they were both going to end up in my gut, I would just save my gut some time and mix them together. Lucy, my lovely wife, was kind enough to open the cans, drain them and find an appropriately sized container for them. I tossed in a few drops of balsamic vinegar for flavor and we were out the door in record time.
Now I love the flavor of salmon, even canned, and I love black beans and balsamic vinegar, so you can imagine my surprise when the taste of the three items combined made me want to vomit on my shoes. Luckily I was able to hold it down and because I had packed nothing else to eat I suffered through the entire meal. I needed the sustenance it provided and I hate to waste food. I am also attempting to live by the credo “eat to live, don’t live to eat”. It is amazing what a little self-talk and a large paper clip attached to your nose will allow you to choke down.
Well I ate in record time and was feeling good that the ordeal was over and I had survived it without sending the contents of my gut to the floor. What I did not understand at the time was that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, just like in high school physics. Well the reaction for this particular action came in two equally disturbing forms: 1. If you think salmon , black beans and balsamic vinegar are disgusting going in, you will need a much more descriptive adjective for the gastronomic after effects. 2. If you want to remain in the good graces of your fellow office mates, you should never put such a concoction into a microwave oven. If you ignore this advice, be prepared to face the wrath of those around you. You can mitigate that wrath somewhat by doing two things: A. Be prepared with cloth and cleaners to scour the bean innards from the microwave cooking cavity. And B. have a can of spray deodorizer nearby, both for the air in the office from cooking and for the later gastronomic by-products.
Respectfully keeping my distance,
Harvey

No man… thank-you thank-you thank-you
From a long time lifestyle-hacker who thought she might be the only crazy one, you sir, rock. I’ll be totally honest and admit that when I started reading the 4-hour work week, I wasn’t convinced it was for me – I’m a biomedical engineering grad student and I genuinely love my work and I’m cool with taking a pay-cut for the awesomeness of doing something I care about – so to me, my work isn’t work – its my passion. I realized though that your gift is the inspiration and pathway to keep working on my dream and never having to go back to the soul-destroyer mill or having to accept the conventional path to success in my area, or having to accept the grad-student mold.
Now, I’m so excited to read 4-hour body – its also an obsession of mine and when I heard you were publishing on it, my respect for you quintupled – I’m sure it’ll shoot to all new highs when I read it – it should be waiting for me in my mailbox at home (I’m currently skippering a boat in the coral sea). Very excited.. can’t wait to read. I’ll repeat… you sir… rock!

Well Tim, Your influence may be reaching farther than you know!
I was in the local Vitamin Shoppe here in San Diego this afternoon looking to pick up my PAGG stack. I also had the Super Cissus on the list.
Whadda ya know? They’re OUT of Super Cissus, I bought the last bottle of the only other brand they carry and they are OUT of Policosanol in ANY brand. I got the last small 60 count bottle of that too!
The girl helping me says,”That’s funny, we don’t sell a lot of policosanol, has it been in the news?” LOL.
I told her about your book and she said, “Oh, yeah, some guy was in here and showed us that book… said he bought 20 copies!”
That’s what supplement shopping is like here in sunny SD!
I wonder about the rest of the country?

Tim, As in chapter 2 of 4HWW the part of Retirement is worst case Scenario Insurance, well it’s getting even worse now. I was a Middle Management Employee for 18 years and because of state budget cuts they eleminated my position. Which helped me find your book but as in chapter 3, just like Hans, I don’t know exactly what I want for the rest of my life (54 now) but I do taste it. A WOO! (window of opertunity) but I need to find what it is because I am bored with what my efforts has brought me. So, like in chapter 4, I need to define “What I Want! and I believe finding this book might be the beginning. Weather you read these words yourself or not, typing them is helping!. I am up to chapter 6 and on my way to purchace 4HB to add to my new self. Also would like to ask permission to start a Meet-up Group under the title 4-Hour-Lifestyle Group using your concepts and promoting your materials to purchace and discuss. I will not start one untill you feel it is fine. Thank you, I enjoy your methods of attacking life! Craig Zinkoski

I am almost finished with the audio version of the book. Two comments/questions:
1. Tim mentions a PDF file that goes along with the audio book to help you with the diet and supplement sections. Where do you get this?
2. The audio book leaves out a lot of material from the book. Not-cool! Does anyone know if there is a plan to re-release with the missing material?

The chapter on increasing testosterone is interesting and my brother said that it truly works. Have you done any research into naturally increasing estrogen levels in women, especially post-menopausal women?

Haven’t gone through all the links in Tools & Tricks for each chapter, but here’s one that’s not working:
