I agree, a cribs episode would be epic. Also, I’m interested in how you guys organize your lives. Specifically, incoming requests, mail, todos, and how you fit that into the broader picture. I know there is a post on organization by Leo, but I would be curious to see visually how you guys keep the seams from exploding. It would be a visual of tools and routines that you both use to be so effective.

I LOVE these vids, I feel inspired to get back to implementing my ‘life changing’ muse and projects just by watching you guys have fun.

Ideas for the next random episode:

=1) A ‘cribs’ style Random with a tour of your house
=1) Thoughts on the future of technology and civilization (i.e. The Singularity)
    2) More on accelerated learning
    3) Top places to visit

p.s. Using Vimeo is a lot smoother for video playback regardless of size/length of video, in comparison to youtube.

The “light delivery” concept Tim talks about reminds of a Japanese concept my wife says is difficult for Americans to understand – “Omoiyari” – a type of altruistic sensitivity. It often involves adding words to make your point less direct and more sensitive to the other person’s feelings.

First of all, nice video though. I really like your Randow videos. I would like to see a Tim Ferriss participating in a Ironman Triathlon (doesn’t necessarily have to be the one in Hawaii since it is very hard to get a slot for 2010). Endurance racing is pretty much all about nutrition (during the race and during preparation period) so since you are very knowleadgable in this field (I heard you will write a book about nutrition) and a sports enthusiast that might be an interesting topic for you.

    Cheers

I watched this when Kevin put it on his blog and it’s brilliant as always, made better because of the longer length and the fact that Glen got some talk time.

Not too fussy with the topics, just fun hearing about different resources and products like those Cordarounds pants (bit out of my price range unfortunately). Greater consistency with the schedule would be nice, but it’s fair enough that that’s not feasible.

Oh, and start uploading these to blip.tv! That way they can be downloaded as a podcast which would be great. Plus their video quality is comparable to a Vimeo.

Hey Tim, great post. Actually headed to Hershey, PA tomorrow, hopefully they have some tastings around town.

Aside from the book, blog & general kick in the pants when I read your content, I must say the ‘Scandinavian After Glance’ has to be one of the best things I have learned from you, its toasting with Sisu!

I too have a 450-500lb dead lift goal this year. If I hit 450 by August, I will go for 500 by EOY. Check out Starting Strength for technique, or the Catalyst Athletics gym in Sunnyvale for 1:1 coaching if you want it. Unfortunately I just got petella-femoral syndrome, where my knee cap is not tracking correctly. This was from poor form on push presses(launching/landing on toes) on Dec. 23. Especially on DL’s, make sure your form is solid..

Aside from the DL goals for 2010; maybe have another kid, for my muse to earn $50K in 2010 and win the Store Contest!, be 150% of quota, finally get those tooth implants I have been putting off, complete 6 fully mastered songs, and last but not least… pay off my Amex for good.

Is that a hookah in the background?

I like the casual style of the video. Made me feel like part of an intimate group rather than a remote audience.

I would like to see more of your “sanctuary” as an episode. Will be interesting to see how it changes over the years as you get older and sitting on the floor on a pillow is on longer comfortable.

I’m not big on NY resolutions as I have ongoing goals at any given time. The DL in the book were helpful in breaking my goals down to shorter term, and combining my career and financial goals with my bucket list. Haven’t dug into the new book yet, but that’s coming soon.

Ha! New years resolutions- I’m trying my darndest to educate myself in Spanish and Japanese. So far so good but it’s only been 1 month. Do you have any advice on how to keep motivated/focused?

    Kevin: hat, YES!
    beg, borrow, steal, acquire!

Vitamin D/A: their relationship is actually not as clear as indicated. check out this:http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/01/03/why-vitamin-a-may-not-be-as-useful-or-harmless-as-you-thought.aspx

Also, to not go D toxic (btw, i take 10,000-15,000 i.u. regulary, in a rainy land up north, and never toxic) get a baseline test and have your doc review every few months. re: docs, if you can afford it, find an integrative/environmental/functional medicine MD. Their parameters for “acceptable/normal” lab tolerances are much tighter and more. They also inquire into other deficiencies/toxicities/organ functions with tests a regular MD will not use. minus: rarely take insurance.

    personal note:

    Dear Tim,

I know this is going to sound odd, but I am a first-time entrepreneur and a (semi) longtime fan and I really really really want a signed copy of your new book! Although I have not performed the admirable feats of your other blog/Twitter/Facebook followers who acquired your trophies (I don’t live in SF, and I saw/jumped through the Facebook giveaway hoops some 100 + people too late), I am hoping you might reconsider, or at least delegate such consideration to an appropriate VA.

In the midst of a rather prolonged darkness in my life, your book is a special beacon of light for me. Since age 19, my life, health, and finances have been thrashed with undiagnosed Lyme Disease and exorbitatant non-insurance covered expenses. I am an artist, and due to this painful situation of illness, dysfunction and medical costs, I have never been able to really “go for it” with my art career. Finally diagnosed and starting to recover, I have been bewildered contemplating what I can do to be able to afford this insanely expensive slow-resolving health challenge. I discovered your book earlier this year, and its bold machinations for outwitting the system give me hope for affording medical care AND a well-heeled, art-full free existence once I am cognitively intact enough to pursue your formula. And I am getting close.

I can of course buy the book, but given the special personal attachment I have to its whip-smart ways outside the box, I would deeply appreciate a signed copy. It would be the superbest belated Christmas present ever!
Or, if you’d rather trade, my collaborative work with artist Joseph Mills is published as a limited edition art book that is now worth $150 though rare booksellers. http://www.topchoicebooks.com/servlet/Detail?no=169 for a veiled peek. Let me know if you care for a dedicated copy–they are all signed so I would have to give yours a special florish to make it a fair trade. ;) Of course, now I know you are not overly art-centric…

If you do care to see the previous artworks/being of she who requests your special attentions, I am your Facebook fan, and my artwork is in my photo albums. I can be contacted for address info via FB should you deign to grant this request.

Thank you so much for being so generous with your time (and hopefully, for your book and your pen ink as well). I’ll still be a fan either way. :)

    Sincerely,
    elizabeth mars

As for chocolate, there is one state that grows cacao plant, and that is Hawaii. As Dole and the other pineapple growers have left Hawaii, they have been replacing the crops with Cacao. Very high quality and just a hint of pineapple in the background. While not on their website, every time my girlfriend goes to the big island, i have her stop at Kona Mountain Coffee store and pick up the Ali’i Dark Chocolates. Amazing quality, made in Kona and runs about $7.50 for 6 ounces. Of course head down to bayview farms for some of the best coffee (kona) in the world.

The “two crappy pages” reminds me how legendary screenwriter William Goldman once cured himself of a severe bout of writer’s block by writing a novel in which each chapter was only as long as his “juice” lasted. If he came up dry after only a paragraph, then that chapter would have to be only one paragraph long. The final book was 160 pages and 53 chapters. Since it was only an exercise to cure his writer’s block, he published it under a pseudonym, but it did get published with the title NO WAY TO TREAT A LADY, under the pseudonym Harry Longbaugh (which was the Sundance Kid’s real name; Goldman was researching his yet-to-be-written screenplay BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID). NO WAY TO TREAT A LADY was later made into a film starring Rod Steiger. (This is all related in Goldman’s book ADVENTURES IN THE SCREEN TRADE.)

I source all of the beans myself – profit share with farmers and put nothing in the chocolate but cocoa beans and organic sugar. I would love to send you some of our dark chocolate. Two observations, if I may:

    1. Viewers may appreciate your concern over length, but have no preference. No need for apologizing. Remember, that’s the beauty of video. We’re not waiting for you to “make your point”. We bow out when we’d like. You could go on for 60 minutes per without sacrificing any viewership.

    2. It’d be nice to have links to each product. I’m sure your back pack artist would appreciate it.

Great banter, loved the insights from both of you cool dorks.

    Constructive criticism:

    2. I prefer the brighter version of the video shoot.

All in all, content is incredible… awesome motivation for me and my goals.

ps. regarding raw chocolate, the most deluxurious I’ve had is from Sacred Heart Chocolate, by Sacred Foods. My favorite: If you like bitter, the Amazonian Herbs one is power-packing medicine. It’s not for the faint-hearted but there are many other less challenging flavors to choose from.

You can google it or get it from the King of Cacao, raw foods guru David Wolfe’s commerce site: http://www.sunfood.com/Catalog/CategorySearchResultsView.aspx?CategoryId=0&SearchTerm=sacred+chocolate+bar&Cid=

Worth the price as a few bites go a long way.

btw, for some reason, I always group David Wolfe, Neil Strauss, Daniel Pinchbeck, and Tim in some elusive category in my brain for: Young Internationalizing Men Who Are Outside the Mainstream, Colorful,
    Smart-set How-To’ists / Writers / Thinkers / Lifestylists.

Check these provocative other writers out if you haven’t already. I can’t imagine they don’t already all know each other!

It’s difficult to apply the Outsourcer Economics Profit & Loss spreadsheet (page 186 of 1st edition 4HWW – I don’t have the 2nd edition handy) until you know the following:

    1. The cost of driving sufficient traffic for your industry/product(s)

    2. What your conversion rate is

    3. What your average sale is (in instances where multiple products at different price points are sold or where customers could/would purchase quantities of a single product)

I know that micro-tests are supposed to help predict these values, but in my case there were way too many variables at play for me to reliably predict these things over a short period of time. The statistical significance just wasn’t there, and I kept changing/tweaking things which throws statistical analysis out the window anyway.

Here’s what I’ve found so far:

1a. I know how to do SEO decently, though it is rather tedious and laborious. I took the time to long-tail SEO about 160 products for Google Base, and I am steadily generating about 1 visit for every 4 products per day. In other words, I’m getting about 40 visits per day in organic search traffic from Google Base. I will soon be adding more products, and I am interested to see if this 1:4 ratio of traffic to product URL continues.

1b. I was a bit of an idiot with AdWords out of the gate. I let AdWords dupe me into thinking that I had to spend $1+ per click initially, because when I first launched my campaigns if I set the max CPC at a reasonable amount (<50¢) Google just laughed and refused to show my ads. At that time, I lacked the confidence in my ads to set a max CPC and stick with it, so I got burned when I raised the CPC enough to get my ads shown immediately. Turns out, I was just way too eager and impatient. Now, I set a realistic and sustainable max CPC and stick with it for a week. Sure enough, Google has come around and will show my ads. Still not as much as I'd like – my 'Impression Share' is not impressive, but at least the economics stand a chance to work and the business will exist long enough for me to worry about gaining Impression Share.

1c. I've been looking into affiliate networks, which are highly attractive because rather than the speculative nature of PPC, affiliates are paid a commission only when a sale occurs. However, most decent networks do have substantial initiation fees, so I am holding off on this for now. I can't set up an Amazon store because they aren't accepting apparel merchants right now. :(

1d. I've started a Facebook Fan Page – http://swimkitten.com/facebook – and plan to utilize it in the future with http://wildfireapp.com (Wildfire won't make much sense until I have a core following established). I will try to leverage the fan page for email subscriber signups by automatically displaying custom user acquisition content for non-fans and exclusive content for fans. I will implement that this week. I've just started leaving a few comments on fashion blogs, and am seeing a little traffic come in – enough to make me think it's worthwhile if I can just get into the habit of doing it and not let it take much time or effort.

    2. My conversion rate thus far is around 0.5%. I've calculated that at 0.5% conversion, 15¢ CPC and full-price items with paid shipping I won't lose money even if the total purchase price is small. However, some of the data that the 0.5% conversion is based on included free shipping and sales. So, I'm now holding my breath in the hopes that the improvements I've made to the site (added some reassuring content like security and privacy info as well as various other changes) will offset any decline in sales from eliminating free shipping and discounts. My page views per visit and other analytics stats have been decent, so I'm optimistic. I think I should be able to get my conversion rate higher over time as I improve the site, increase product offerings, implement customer feedback and establish a more trusted/attractive presence in the marketplace.

Hope this synopsis helps someone else! I wanna hear how other contest participants are getting on!

Thanks for talking about slowing down and appreciating things in the moment, alongside accomplishment. I’ve been doing this more and more lately as well. Also, the friends thing. I don’t have the same point of friends using me for things down the road like I assume you do, but there are similar things. Usually small things, but you know which friends are high quality, and which aren’t really that big in your life as far as meaningful relationship goes. Sometimes you just got to take the load off.

Lastly, I love the intention to deliver serious information more lightly. This is something I’ve been focusing on lately, as well, and I find that when I’m able to lay some truth on someone like I’m talking about the weather, or even make it fun, we get much further. In the words of the great Mary Poppins, “Just a spoon full of sugar makes the medicine go down.” My mom also just recommended a book on this particular topic to me called Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When the Stakes are High that you might want to check out.

Tim, you’ll probably be looking at going bigger budget – but if you want a cheap option for that Shark Dive – Flip makes a surprisingly durable underwater housing for their Flip Ultra model cameras. It’s good down to 30 ft, but I’ve read of people using it well beyond that. Just used it in Belize for snorkeling and loved it. Surprisingly good job not distorting the colors, no visibility limitations and full underwater functionality. Only word of caution is to be very mindful of the lack of image stabilization. Especially when under water.

The case is $35 on Amazon – http://bit.ly/7isAmq or $50 directly from Pure Video http://bit.ly/5YSncC – there’s a difference between 1st Gen and 2nd Gen flips so make sure you get the right housing.

Looking forward to the video if you do it!

    T-bone,

I was wondering if you could write a post elaborating on your relationship with Kenzabur? ?e, winner of the 1994 Nobel Prize in Literature. In the years before he won, I was reading a lot of Japanese lit in translation, as well as systematically viewing canonical Japanese cinematic works. He emerged as a favorite artist at a time when he was not only unheard of in the West, but also arguably, completely indecipherable to an Occidental sensibility. A meditation on Japanitude itself in the modern context, there is a certain courage evident in the honesty of his writing. In that sense, he could be viewed as a literary practitioner of one goal of the quantified self movement. Namely, a naked accounting of our innermost and secreted animus.

Also, 15-30 minutes of direct sunlight provides a healthy amount of Vitamin D, reduces cholesterol, helps the immune system and regulates high blood pressure.

Interesting information regarding the Vitamin D and human deficiencies. I’ve been interested in the powers of sun light for a long time. I’m a regular user of Light Therapy especially during winter season to lift my mood, stabilize my rhythms and invigorate the body. I post every week on these topics and covered light therapy recently in my blog. Let me know what you think.

Anyways… Tim, all the best with your new book and have a safe & enjoyable adventure in Cape Town!

    Awesome episode, truly random!

Only one main feedback I have about the video itself, I found the sound levels between Kevin and Tim very different, I had to adjust the volume for each person almost like Kevin was miced up but Tim wasn’t.

As for chocolate tasting, I have actually done it before and I learnt a LOT about chocolate, real chocolate and confectionery chocolate. And white chocolate which it turns out isn’t really chocolate at all.

Hey Tim I love these random videos so I’d like to thank both you and Kevin. As a team, you work really well together when discussing ideas now and there was some great unintentional comedy moments during this video! My favourites were your impersonation of underwater filming and also yourself trying to explain what you meant by delivering things lightly and you ended up saying the sledgehammer to the kneecap phrase which was superbly followed by Kevin’s line “Good luck with that!”

I’d also like to thank you for your continued blogging and I’m really looking forwards to buying your ‘Superhuman’ book. I think I was lucky to stumble across your blog at the young age of 18 and I’m now 20 and have been an avid follower ever since I read your “From Geek to Freak” article. Your philosophy on life and your creativity in terms of exploring productivity methods and becoming more effective are truly very admirable and have literally set the direction and focus for my own personal life. I recently passed on my copy of your book to my father who now understands a lot more about my aims in life and where I got my inspiration from for my “think big, dream big but appreciate and enjoy the little things” approach to life… Needless to say, he is now a fan of yours as well. =)

I thought you might find my feedback on your videos useful:

    • As one of your regular followers, I really do not care how long your videos are, I still find time to watch them. As others have commented, you apologise for the length of the videos which is not necessary. Personally, I view your videos almost as educational and enlightening because it’s great to see how you put things into action in your own life.
    • In terms of advertising, I find it quite hard to resist putting the video on pause to checkout any websites you mention, or products you recommend. I’m sure you are already aware, but this seems to be a very powerful “word of mouth” tool for building up awareness of products and services you have interests in. I usually find myself later recommending the very sites you have suggested.

So I’d just like to say a very big thank you for being different to the vast majority of people in this world. You are a true inspiration. =)

I’m wondering what your thoughts are on GTD? Yeah… I’m one of those. I imagine stuff can easily fall through the cracks with all the traveling. How do you stay organized?

    Nice video.

I recently joined “Toastmasters” to improve my public speaking (and to lease my fear of it), and the other day i was talking about intonation and body language with a guy who’s working in sales who taught me a lot. So i think some work in that direction could help you “sell” your ideas to people.

I ordered the 4HWW:expanded. My main goal this year is to get financial freedom.

I love the art (on the wall), quite funny that that would “offend” anybody. Maybe America is a bit more “puritan” in this way than Europe.

If Keven is really interested in learning about bonsai, there’s a great club that meets monthly in Palo Alto called Kusamura. I’m usually the only one in there under 40, so it would be good to have some young-blood.

Also: One of the long-time members (> 50 years) runs a 6-week beginner course that meets every Saturday in her garage, and it starts this week. I did it 2 years ago, and it was easily one of the most high-value experiences I’ve had.

Hey guys – great post. I was wondering if you’d heard of SnagFilms.com…it’s an online library of over a thousand documentaries you can watch anytime for free. SnagFilms had a holiday gimmick of giving away a package of films online as a free but still thoughtful present to friends/family. I gave my friend “SuperSize Me” which didn’t go over too well but it’s the thought of giving a film that counts. Anyway, just thought it was worth mentioning as you discussed your top xmas gifts.

[...] Remove Vitamin-D deficiency. My diet is decent, but my main sources of vitamins (cereal and protein shakes) don’t contain Vitamin D. Also, you’re supposed to get about 15 minutes of unprotected sunlight per day at least twice a week. That’s certainly not happening. Vitamin-D deficiency doesn’t show up easily but has a lot of published research suggesting it is dangerous and linked to all kinds of bad things from osteoporosis to a number of cancers. I’m actually not positive I have a deficiency, so I’m planning to have a blood-test to find out my initial level – this will also act as a forcing function to finding a doctor out here. Fixing this is simple with inexpensive supplements (about $10 per year). This idea was completely stolen from one of Kevin Rose’s resolutions. [...]

In you 4 HWW book, you discarded that option simply stating that product will make money quicklier than service. I think you are probably right but I think maybe there could be some people -like myself-who are still interested in building a business based on providing a service and also make it quick and efficient income generator.

    Hello Tim,

I’m currently reading your wonderful book and thank you.

I’m 28, married, legally blind (born with glaucoma and other complications), living in downtown Seattle. I’m driven to become more in a short amount of time because the doctors indicate that I’ll lose all vision by 35.

I currently work at a Honda dealership in the internet sales department. I related to your example of haggling with an Infiniti dealer for two weeks.

I’m working 45hrs per week, wearing out my single eye and not making any more than $2,500/month. I need a change.

Some of the websites you recommended in your book have either gone solely subscription/pay or in grandcentral.com case, invitation only.

Are there any website design companies that you’ve come across recently that you could recommend, or are the sites in your book still the best available?

I have a couple ideas that I’ll have to test but with my vision, there is only so much time in the day that my vision is the best. This is why your efficiency suggestions are of so much interest to me.

    Thank you again.

Thanks for the video. You two always make me smile – I’ve only watched the new year’s resolution part so far. Good luck with them but I’m surprised that one of them is to say ‘no’ more often and more quickly. I’d thought that you’d be excellent at this already.

Anyway, my lifestyle has had regular ‘mini retirements’ but it has resulted in a yoyo bank balance. This time I intend to change this and I’ve based my ‘goals’ on the principles from 4HWW. Though I think they still need to be beefed up (not wild enough yet), which I’ll do when I begin my next mini-retirement at the start of Feb.

Also, I turn 40 next week, so from the time I turn 40 til the end of Feb, I intend to do ‘comfort challenges’. I hope from doing these challenges to become more bold and confident.

Thanks again for the inspiration. I’m excited and anxious about Feb but I hope it’ll make a big difference.

And good luck with yours, especially the powerlifting. I think you’ll be fine saying NO.

I would also like to get better in saying no, because sometimes friends/acquaintances can be very tiring. I always pray that I won’t become a person that is considered tiring by others.

I’m pretty good in having things my way without making people get mad at me, though. But it takes lots of diplomacy and tactic to do that, because I don’t lie and have to find ways to deliver my message without any lies involved .. tiresome as well … I often don’t say all of the truth though … which is technically not lying :)

Tim, I’d like to invite you, Glenn and Kevin, to participate in sailing across the Mediterranean this summer on a sailing voyage. If this sounds like something you guys would be interested in let’s get in touch and make it happen.

Your book motivated me to create an online community (Vagabond Sailing) to connect people from all over the world through hands-on, roadtrip-esque sailing adventures (I call them seatrips).

I was inspired by my Couchsurfing experiences in Europe, and I wanted to create something of my own that was complementary to it. Since my least favorite parts of that trek were the cramped planes and trains in between destinations, I came up with an alternative way for people to move around the region – by sailing! (which I realize is also somewhat cramped, but at least you’re learning about sailing, making new friends, and experiencing locales that can’t be reached by any other means)

You don’t have to have any prior experience sailing to help sail the boat – you’ll learn from the captain by doing, and by the end of it you’ll have some amazing memories and a new skill to add to your repertoire!

Let me know Tim, it’ll be a great new experience for you!!

    Cheers,
    Rob

Are you still training HIT style???

I’ve never heard of anyone doing that with deadlift, so I’m assuming you are training a different way.

Damn! That is a damn impressive box squat for your bw. Well done.

I’m training DL differently. HIT is awesome for a lot of things, but not relative strength increases without mass gain. It will all be in my new book. Crazy results with some amazing trainers. Added 20 lbs to my DL in the last 5 days alone. 500 lbs in the DL isn’t much to a real powerlifter, but it’s a damn good target for a non-PL’er at 170.

      Good luck!

    Dear Tim,

first off, just wanted to thank you: the 4HWW changed my life, it inspired me to set up a new business in an industry I have no experience or schooling in. So far it’s dauntingly difficult but going well nonetheless.

A little off-topic, but am hoping for advice on a weight-issue: I contracted an aggressive infection in my lung and heart area early December and came close to dying from it. I’ve come out on top, but will be recovering for 6 months and lost quite some weight: went from 155 pounds to 125 in 3 weeks. At 155, I was a 30-year-old avid runner, 5’10″ with low body fat and well-defined muscles. At 125, I’m just skinny as hell.

Any tips on regaining the weight in the most healthy way possible, restoring my muscles rather than just adding body fat? Specific foods, exercises?

Would be grateful for any help you can give and in the meantime I’ll be putting those 4HWW principles into practice even more ferociously, as I simply won’t have the energy for much more than 4 hours a week anyway. Gotta love a challenge!

    Enjoy life, it’s fragile!

The Big House Red Tim and Kevin enjoy in the video was not available at the Trader Joe’s I went to (Portland Or – Glisan St). They no longer carry it although the rep I spoke with recommended something similar called Rosso – from Francis Ford Coppola. Very tasty and only 7.99

After watching the video, I decided to try some of the Big House Red. Not bad, but my favorite cheap bottle of wine is still the Smoking Loon Merlot for around 10 bucks. Not too dry and everyone seems to become a fan after I reccomend it.

For what it’s worth – I saw a cool job opportunity today – help screenwriter John August (“Go” “The Nines” “Charlies Angels” and others) handle his blog and other tech stuff – full time, based in LA, and sounds like you can work on your own projects. I have no personal or financial interest in this enterprise – I just wanted to pass this on – here’s the site: http://johnaugust.com/archives/2010/hiring-a-new-person

    Hello everyone -

Great vibe here. I am hyped to begin a connection with the Four Hour community. My nose is only about 85 pages into the book and this is the first blog that has gathered enough quality content to pull me as a subscriber. Many thanks to Tim for his inspiration and continued support towards the potential of the NR lifestyle. I too will do my best and plan to start now.

    2010 resolutions:
    1. See more live music here in the SF Bay Area (Avett Brothers @ The Fox on Apr 17)
    2. Eliminate my most extravagant fixed expense (my offsite wine storage locker), sell the bottles I won’t drink, and drink through the remaining bottles I have kept
    3. Put as many of the Four Hour concepts into my starting lineup

Tim… let me know if you want to be involved with any one of those three. Number 2 will be quite enjoyable.

    Cheers to all -

    Hi Tim,

The bit on 700 words a night for writers is a beautiful piece of advice that I have been implementing with great success. It’s astounding how hard of a mental roadblock it is sometimes to just get down to business and write a few hundred words on paper.

This exercise is great for starting and I’m finding that I end up writing more than planned. Looking forward to hearing more on practical writing advice.

Questions: How are you approaching the incorporation of technical methodology/advanced concepts your reader is not aware of into your writing? Does it help to outline first?

    Thanks!
    Eric

P.S. I started the Geek to Freak program and low-glycemic index diet program last week. I’m finding that eating is really the challenge. I have decided to batch my lunch/dinner prep by making 2 packages of lean ground turkey, 1 bag of lentils and 2 bags of steamed vegetables twice a week and placing them in meal separate tupperwares. Astounding results already!

P.P.S Per your recommendations, I also am trying Yerba Mate and leaving the Bialetti percolator for the mornings.

Our company hired a marketer who was a devotee of “The Four Hour Work Week” and a frequent poster on this blog. All he did was try to get out of doing work by pushing tasks off onto other team members through laziness, and passive-aggressive bullying. I hope there’s more to the book than what I saw in this individual. Honestly, what I saw in his behavior does not make me want to read it.

      Hi Steve,

I’m sorry to hear that. The book does not promote that type of behavior. The way you get ahead in the real 4HWW world is by producing 3-10x per hour what your colleagues do. That gives you the ability to negotiate fair but uncommon arrangements. So sorry to hear someone misinterpreted the message.

      All the best,

    Hey all/Tim,

Here’s an interview with the world record holder for free diving, Will Trubridge:

He talks about the physiological and psychological challenges of apnea (breath-hold) diving and there’s a video attached of when he broke the world record at 88m.

    Tim,

I left a comment for you a few days ago inviting you and the guys to come out on a sailing adventure this summer with the non-profit organization I’ve started.

I’m not sure if it’s still awaiting moderation from you or not, but I wanted to let you know that I just received word from your friend Rolf Potts, author of Vagabonding, that he is interested in participating. So I wanted to let you know that, it’s shaping up to be quite the adventure and I’m stirring up enough interest in the Couchsurfing community that we may have more than one boat going on this voyage! Hope to hear from you soon!

I have a stronger deadlift PR goal this year too; though not quite as high as 500. My grip strength is my limiting factor. I have solid form and know I could knock out more reps @ greater weights if only my grip were better.

What do you do to “hack” your grip strength? I don’t want to use straps if I can avoid it – do you use straps?

My two cents: I consider myself a Tim Ferriss disciple and I don’t find the GTD methods incongruent at all. GTD is a great TACTICAL method or organizing workflow. If anything, it allows you to free up your time more and “batch” in the work later, at pre-designated periods (for collection, process, and the actual work). I find the 4HWW to be more strategy…although there are quite a few tactics in there. Tim got me to set limits on others’ expectations about time and email.

I really enjoyed your information on vitamin D deficiency but I was curious why you don’t seem to recommend the vitamin D home testing kit made available by the Vitamin D Council, a non-profit organization promoting vitamin D health. You seemed to be more in favor with getting the test done by a doctor. Any particular reason?

BTW, after listening to your video, I started taking 5000 IU per day of vit D, and I’ve also done a couple of posts on my blog about the subject.

Great topic seems late though, I like the outfitting. I agree fight club has a major tennants of stoicism and emotional freedom in it.

Even the process of goal decisions, of decision making and congruence with this goals has been taken from the young man these days, you seem them on the streets flabby or texted out of exuberance. Some governments are to blame taking exercise out of routines, school playgrounds have been sold in the UK.

    Rant off.

I agree with you fight club has major tennants of Stiocism, we are taught as young men not to goal set, not to value congruence, not to value decision making.

Our culture celibrates nothing, actually it celibrates nothing, young men are flabby and texting away their exuberance, governments sell off sports fields and take away decision making classes from school. Love live the goal setting process, only entrepeneurs in their own fight can remain steadfast.

My first visit to your blog. Nice. I didn’t have 40 minutes to sit through the video, watched part of it. Lot’s of “um’s” and not a real doctor, medical council. Brief and focused can be good. Something like, had blood work done, checked on my vitamin D levels, not good. I probably would have continued on past that part. Maybe a little more rehearsal, then shoot. Only a suggestion.

    IDEA FOR NEXT SHOW

    Hey guys,

I’d be interested in a show about humanitarian lifestyle design – ie – how X or Y left their boring day job and went and improved the lives of X amount of people in a village or city or anything like that.

How their thinking differently, changed a charity for the better, or created their own charity … anything along those lines… about changing from soulless work, to meaningful work :)

I’d also be interested in something along the same lines, but in terms of helping our earth.

    Be well :)

Not that 189 comments aren’t plenty sufficient, but since I loved the post so much I thought I’d at least let you! 2 GIANT takeaways for me in this one:

    1) Give as much focus to appreciation as to achievement–way to keep it real. It’ll never get better than today.
    2) Take the pressure off and just tell stories–It’s infinitely easier to psych yourself into slopping out 2 pages of crap a day, than to have to gear up for perfection every time you touch the keyboard.

    Very liberating Tim, thanks brotha.

Timmmm, this is the second “Random” vid I’ve watched, liking them more and more. Actually started reading your book when I was like 18–finished it in like a week, went depressed without more content–pursued everything I”m good at (hardest part is deciding what to dooo) and now I”m finished up school.

Anyway, the chocolate part was super cool, please try (juuust try it) XE by a distributor company called Xocai (I’ve recently signed up with them and am normally SUPER SKEPTICAL about a distributor-marketing company, but have done my research and needless to say, very impressed with their chocolate). XE is their energy drink but it has ingredients you tote all day so thought you might enjoy.

Also, I recommend your book to everybody and their mother–it’s fantastic. I guess, would you (and Kevin) maybe do your next RE (Random Episode) on how you chose what to do first? Follow the passion? Follow the bills? Followed wherever the road took you?

    Thanks :)

    Hey Tim,
I hope you visited some Cape wineries and sampled some good wine. I visited Cape Town some 3 years ago, it was pretty cool. had a road trip from Pretoria to Cape Town through the Karoo desert. They have some of the best food on earth at the little tiny village shops along the way. Just curious, did you do a township tour while there?

    Good vid.

I’m really into personal metrics and lifestyle management. As a future topic, I’d be interested in hearing how you handle your personal life metrics. You might have written about that, if so I must have missed it.

How you measure all your stats/metrics on a personal/physical level to then make informed decision and reach tangible goals. Whether it be using tools like Fitbit, DailyBurn etc. It’d be interesting to hear.

I’d also love a topic on swords as well, +1. How long did you train in Kendo?

Tim, I just got a copy of your book on Thursday and I’m hooked. I have been so stressed out lately. My business has grown to where I can no longer handle it and my 9-5 job. I’ve really been struggling to manage both and it has started to take a toll on my physically and mentally. Things had gotten so bad last week that I actually went to see a therapist! At the end of my first session, as I was about to walk out the door, he handed me a copy of your book. OMG! It was just what I needed. It’s exactly what I’ve been thinking for some time now but I thought I was the only ‘wacko’ (at least that’s how everyone around me seems to think of me because I don’t ‘conform’ to the company ‘norm’).

For two years now I’ve been able to complete my 9-5 work in about 2 hours, and I felt so guilty for having so much free time. I’ve even asked for extra work, but got nothing! I’ve tried to figure out how to work remotely, but my boss is totally against it so I know I’m going to have to leave eventually. But your book gave me some great ideas.

    1) At lunch today I picked up an air card that allows me to connect to my own server “outside the company network” even when I’m at work. Now I can do something productive with my own business with all of my spare time at work, and nobody has to know!
    2) While my company frowns on employees working remotely, and frowns on flexible hours (at least when it comes to coming in late), they do NOT frown on coming in EARLY and leaving early. So I’ve started coming in at 6 and leaving at 2 or 3 (my boss doesn’t get her until 9 or 9:30) so I have plenty of “unsupervised” time in the mornings to do as I please.
    3) I’m working on my dream line and I’m working on the time line for my exit from the 9-5 world in the very near future. I’ve just finished several projects that are going to get rid of a little debt that I have and then I’m ready to break free!

Thanks so much for living your dream and sharing your techniques with the rest of us! I’ll be following your blog!

The one tip which has become a resolution (of sorts) came from one of Tim’s blogs about time management – the NOT TO dos rather than to dos. These have helped shape what I can do by me just thinking “what is really unneccessary and not that important?” Then I can excecute on the important stuff.

Hi Tim – Enjoyable vid. Healthy Hedonism is my philosophy! I’m eating whatever the hell I want on Saturdays, exercising and eating well the other 6 days…so, does my plateau mean I’ve got too much stress and drink too much wine during the week? Crap. I know the answer, alright, alright…

Candor – Transparent communication rocks! How’s it going for you so far this year?

I’d really like to be a catalyst for transparent discussions regarding female sexuality specifically opening a world-wide acknowledgement and appreciation of female ejaculation. Australia recently moved to ban fejac…I’m not kidding Tim. Any suggestions on how to spread the word of female goodness in fluidity? I co-blog, I’m trying to get more articles published in a local newspaper, what else?

Okay, also am finishing my first kids’ book. I need to find a Japanese illustrator to help me tweak the Japanes-esque illustrations, then I’ll go to Tokyo and Sapporo to read to some JHS students. Do you have any cool contacts for marketing my book in Japan or getting it into the schools as an English reader?

I’m not trying to be your fake friend! Just would like some help with contacts if you are willing. Of course, if you are Calgary, AB, I will take you for a Kettle One martini with a twist to say arigato!

Hey Tim, you mentioned that you’ve been having issues dealing with the “fake friends” in your life. This is a problem I’ve had to deal with as well. My mentor recommended a book to me called Boundaries. It is a christian book, and written by two pastors, don’t let that scare you as the book is filled with non religious/spiritual content. I am not religious and still found the book the be a great resource and guide for me.

I have one sort of strange question :P – did you have any sizing issues with your Dharma shoe? I ordered a pair and received them, but were actually a bit big so I am having to exhange for a smaller size. I did order a size larger than expected, going by the recommendation of several reviews of the shoe, but perhaps they adjusted that in their latest model.

If you are brave and willing to be challenged physically and mentally (and a bit emotionally) I would happily give you a a few lessons on aerial tissu in my studio in Berkeley (adjacent to the old Sharfenberger home). You can bring your tango experience and put it in the air. I posted this to see if you guys read this as well so I will check in a week to see if you do. Value of the offer, $90 per hour x as many times as it takes to create a 5 minute routine, experience of flying through the air= priceless.

    Tim, 4HWW readers, et al,

I’ve been a fan of 4HWW since 2007, I must have single handedly been responsible for 20 subsequent sales to friends and family members since.

One issue I always had with the concepts in 4HWW was that it focuses on retail examples. The problem there is I run service businesses. I’ve been outsourcing for years, I run a web/software development company, the service industry in my experience cannot be outsourced the same way the many models provided can i.e. retail. Does the new 4HWW book tackle this angle?

Secondly with the recession, I’ve found that a) local talent is much less expensive, b) with the rise in popularity of offshore workers, they have become more expensive (although that may already be on the decline as a result of the global economy), c) in general the communication quality and cultural comprehension that can be found in local workers is such that, it’s less efficient & more problematic to hire offshore then local.

Tim or anyone else, do you see any relevance in the issues noted above? Does it make the 4HWW any less useful or applicable?

I’ll take my response off the air…

    Thomas

Good points all. Thanks for the comment.. and spreading the word!

      1) The new version does address more service examples.
      2) If it makes more sense, logistically or financially, I always hire local. Most of my assistants are US-based at the moment, though my main exec VA is on an island in Canada :)

The main thing I got from the book is ‘focus’, I now say to myself ‘is this a waste of time’ before doing things which saves me heaps of time, the book has paid for itself soooo much, many, many times over.

I tried that Anthony Robbins stuff years ago but it is too much about goals etc., the simple answer is do less but make sure what you do is the important stuff.

That and the power of delegation :)

Am not directly impressed or touched by the audio/video; why are you posting this kind of chitchat? Especially on the New Year resolutions; why would that matter? For me the setting and way presented was a bit to ‘searched’ for, not natural enough, a tiny bit too much hee look at us, doing cool, knowing much… just a flavor that was seen through my eyes in this episode
It is also too long, 40 minutes… is it not dense enough (maybe you were practising the ‘lighten’ up resolution :) in that case, sharpen a bit (just a one person opinion of course) :)

    Tim,
This is kind of random–but hey, that’s your style, right?

Look, I’m a big wine guy–from Cali. I love wine. But I’ve been in Southeast Asia over a year and a half and I’m going nuts. I know you spent a lot of time in Thailand, not to mention much of greater Asia–can you reccommend any decent wines from the area? Something not too highly-priced.

I hear there are actually some good wines coming out of here now. They’ve got sub-climes that can’t be found anywhere in the world and unique growing practices that are absolutely revolutionary. I hear they can pull multiple harvests in a year and one winery even has a system where they grow the graps floating in water like cranberries! No one does this elsewhere as far as I know.

Also, lots of European settlers have brought their practices over.

Couple that with the rising popularity of spicy Asian foods around the world, and some deeply buried rumours I’ve heard is that Asian wines will see there day and that there are some good Thai wines out there yet to be discovered. I’m even thinking of exploring opportunities in the industry, but anyways…

All that said, everything I tasted has been s*** and I don’t even know where to start. Help me out if you can, Man. The beer is nothing to write home about either, and I’m sorely missing my wines. Recommendations? Tim, anyone?

    Thanks in advance ;)

I don’t need much money as everything that is, let’s say, close to nature does not cost much.

1000 Euros par month would be ok (=1.356,22 USD).

Do a google search for “vibram fivefingers” and you’ll find the company. I haven’t ordered a pair yet myself, but it appears you don’t want any room between your toe and the end of the shoe–unlike traditional shoes. Looks like the company ships anywhere in the world though, and I’d imagine they have a pretty phenomenal return policy–not to mention shipping can’t cost too much for something so light. They do have a unique form of measurement, so be sure to do the research on site or drop them an email.

Right around 29:17 is where Tim talks about what he has on his desk:

    “Train. Write. Drink.”

“What is the one constraint if removed that would make me 5, 10 or 20 times more productive? Ditto for private life.”

“What if I had to do this in 15 min? How would I define(?) it or how would I delegate it?”

“What is the the downside if I lose this person for 3 months, 6 months or forever…?”

One question… anyone can answer… how would you word the 2nd part of the 1st question regarding constraints?

“What is the one constraint if removed that would make my private life 5, 10 or 20 times more productive…?”

How do you all define “productivity” in your private life? i.e. I want to be married in 5 years and start having kids in 10? Or… whatever.

I’m not sure. This is the first time I’ve thought about my private life in terms of productivity. Maybe it could say “5, 10, or 20 times better…?”

    Anybody have thoughts on that?

Great vid Tim, Kevin, and Glenn! Thanks. I like the look of the camera that you start the video with.

    Hi Tim,
nice episode, fresh ideas, im a new fan to the blog and 4HWW (trying not to rip thru it!)
I liked especially the pause to appreciate the journey and the discoveries made along the way, not just eyeing up the next conquest;)
The healing foods cookbook and datsusara hemp bag also caught my eye as I’m a hemp food manufacturer and avid user and working on my raw vegan skills.
    looking forward to more random!

hmm…..Vitamin A/D update today on the Mercola site.

    excerpt:
” British Medical Journal has published a remarkable paper confirming that low vitamin D levels obtained in the past are a risk factor for developing colon cancer in the future.

But the study contained an even more significant finding — as Dr. Cannell’s site has reported before, vitamin A, even in relatively low amounts, can thwart vitamin D’s association with reduced rates of colon cancer.”

What a fun video. I just found your blog today and am so glad that I did. You have such a great perspective on things. I write as well, but for my own sake and have been trying to be more dedicated to it. I have created a goal of writing three times a week for an hour. And I got to to tell you it really does work to force yourself to sit down and do it. Of course there is a lot of garbage that gets jotted down but in between that I have found some pretty good things that I can expand on. I love going back and reading and thinking everything I wrote was awful and the finding out…not so much.

I look forward to seeing more of you.

I am excited about your new book “Becoming Superhuman”! I can’t wait for the release.

My new years resolution is to lose my excess midriff skin from giving birth 13 months ago (it was a big baby). I’d love to be a test subject to help you with your data and website. I strongly suggest you include at least a few women in your analysis!

I personally absolutely resolved not to make any new years resolutions again, ever! And that has been my new years resolution for many years. All the vitamin D afficionados need to take into consideration that you need sun on your entire naked body for fifteen to twenty minutes a day in order for your body to synthesize adequate vit D…..

    Hey Tim,

Cool episode, as usual. My brother and I are trying to start a muse based on a daily sweetener made of stevia, Vitamin D, and other vitamins. We have a test website, (see website field). We’re having trouble getting people to click through to purchase. If you or any readers have any comments or suggestions we’d love to hear them!

    Thanks,

      Jamie:

I went to your site. Try using testimonials. Testimonials are instant trust, especially if you can highly influental people within your target market or demographic to give them.

Are you advertizing on adwords? People searching for “vitamin D” are likely wanting to buy. Of course, test to find the best keyword. I’ve found that keywords that you think right away would be great for conversions aren’t as good as ones that took you months to think of.

Just watching this episode now. Have you hit that 500lb deadlift yet Tim? If not, I think its definitely possible with some specific training. I pulled 400 at a BW of 185 with some simple periodization and a peaking cycle. I like Mark Rippetoe’s Starting Strength Program for basic linear progression, and Jim Wendler’s 5-3-1 as well. The latter has less volume and I feel more sustainable for someone that has already passed that novice phase of adpation, or does other activities. Lifting heavy three times a week made it tough to do alot of BJJ.

Tim, I need to know the maximum result, least amount of effort needed to learn a new trade and if this can be applied to going back to finish my degree while working 60 hours a week and family, other obligations etc. The trade and degree are related and I need to get my degree finished as a part of my job contract but not given any accommodations from my employer to do so. I am excited about going back to school and my current job but need to get the most out of it with a limited amount of time. Can you help?
