The last two blog posts have moved me more than any others, and the new expanded 4-Hour Workweek has hit #4 on The New York Times bestseller list and #3 on the USA Today Money list!

In a future post, I will explain exactly what I did in PR and marketing (including recordings and screenshots) to help it happen, but the reality is: you made it happen.

You all rock. For buying the book? No. For making this community what it is. For helping one another and sharing your stories and lessons learned. For teaching me more than I can ever possibly teach you.

This is my dream team.

I’m leaving for South Africa this week (first time to Africa!), but I wanted to try and express my thanks before I left. There are three things I’d like to start with:

1) Free signed books at Samovar in San Francisco
2) Free round-trip ticket anywhere in the world per the last post
3) 600 free books on Facebook (+ Facebook bankruptcy template)…

1) Free signed books at Samovar in San Francisco

There are roughly 100 signed copies of the 4HWW–including both hardcovers and paperback galleys–available for free at all Samovar locations in San Francisco. Please ask the manager on duty, and there is a limit of 2 per person. Alas, once they are gone, they are gone.

2) Free round-trip ticket anywhere in the world per the last post

I loved all of them and felt that it was hard to vote for one, as lifestyle design is — by definition — personal. That which impresses the most people might not be the best approach for you to emulate, if your circumstances are different. For that reason, I would like to mail a thank-you gift to each of the initial 15 case studies who were finalists. You know who you are.

3) 600 free books on Facebook

Not long ago, I declared Facebook bankruptcy and moved things around. In fact, I started over from scratch. 1,200+ unread messages required it. Information Chapter 11.

The catalyst was an e-mail I received from Paul Colligan, which inspired me to finally take the leap and get things under control. To tame the beast. Find his group e-mail here, which you can use as a template if needed.

Here’s what I’m doing as a belated Christmas giveaway: changing things up.

My Facebook peeps never get any love — it’s always my blog readers and Twitter followers. This time, I’m giving away 600 books using what Facebook does best: getting people in touch. The first 100 people to do the following will be mailed up to six books to share (1 for each of their friends, and 1 copy for them).

The three steps are simple and fast:

1) Step one: Take a picture of yourself holding a copy of The 4-Hour Workweek (old or new) and upload it to the Tim Ferriss fan page, so I can easily find the pics and contact you directly. There are more than 100 photos I’ve put nowhere else, and dozens of never-before-seen videos are coming. If it’s a Kindle or electronic version, just show it on the screen and you’re all set.

2) Step two: Tag 3-5 friends (no fewer than 3 friends and no more than 5) in the picture whom you’d like to give the new version of the book. They might be workaholics, travel lovers, recent college grads, people who hate the rat race, or even your parents or siblings. Be sure to tag at least 3 of your friends in the picture, but don’t tag more than 5 friends total. There are a limited number of books I can give away, and I want as many people to have gifts for their friends as possible.

3) Step three: Post reasons and a link. In the photo description, you need to do two things: explain to your friends why you chose them, and link to either the post of case studies or this Slideshare presentation. Feel free to write your own, or you can mix and match these templates:

    2009 was a tough year for my family with illness and life in general knocking me around. 2010 looking much better thanks to you. Your book is a lifesaver. It’s become my personal bible.

    Wow, Africa. Sounds exciting. Personally I prefer Japan and France, but I wouldn’t mind going to Africa. Can’t wait to see your posts, pics and videos. It would be great to see some cheetahs.

    Hey Tim, I LOVE the book and have been trying to get some of my recent college grad friends to read it. I’m a senior in college and have used some of the outsourcing techniques in the first book to help me with research for some classes, help me design the eBook cover and video cover for my Juggling Course and have also hired individuals in the Phillipines to do article marketing for my home business to generate leads for me!     Very glad to hear your making the trip to South Africa… I loved your first book but actually stopped reading it at the point where you mentioned people shouldn’t visit Africa because it’s not safe… I’m not saying your wrong, but I’ve greatfully survived for 33 years thus far and just thought your comment was a bit harsh from someone who’se never been here :) I might just continue reading your book tonight… which reminds me, I must implement some more of your suggestions (it sounds easier than it is)

    I know it won’t be your last trip here as Africa is an amazing continent.

    Love your book and the videos were inspiring. I’d like to see a whole book full of different in depth case studies of what people have done.

    By the way, I’m sure you know that 40% of your readers come from outside the US. Every time you offer something only to US residents, you alienate those readers. Very US-centric!

      It’s a tough situation for me. It often comes down — for legal reasons or logistics — to offering to US-only or no one at all. I guess I just feel that sharing to those I can is better than sharing to no one.

    Tim Your Book the FHWW Rocks.
    I bought the audio version about 1 year ago and I have listened to it more than 5 times and I working towards the goal of homeschooling my kids on a cruise.
    I was a little bit surprised than you did not really talk about what is possible in Africa in your first book, and just mentioned the fact that people should avoid wars etc. I am very excited that you are finally making a trip to Africa (South Africa is kind of a little bit different, but is a good starting point.) I admire entrepreneurs like Richard Branson who see a lot of potential in developing business leadership in Africa

    My book: “Emerging ONE Billion Customers in Africa”

    will be published in March and I must thank you for helping inspire me to write this book as part of my FHWW plan.
    I hope you will have a lot of fun and discover a lot of new opportunities in Africa as it is the next frontier for smart entrepreneurs and investors.

    Thanks amigo. It sounds a little cliche to say a book changed my life but in 2007 when I first read The 4-hour Work Week it got me to think about the direction I was taking in career and life. Within six months my wife and I sold our house in LA and started a great adventure. I become a PADI certified Divemaster, we sailed the NW Caribbean with my wife’s father, we explored Mexico and Guatemala by bus and visited 14 awesome National Parks in our RV around the Western US.

    My current muse is to offer Internet project management consulting to those building websites or applications. The automation phase will be to turn the offering into a product.

Your parents, your friends growing up, infuencial thinkers and authors, the teacher in grade school who gave you confidence and supported you (or whatever). Your readers who gave you valuable feedback and you in turn gave back more results and it goes on.
    The whole stream of our lives feed into the current moment, and everything that you are and we are comes together to form the 4HWW community.

    I also want to note that it is Extremely auspisious for you to have a buddhist thangka (painting) in your video. As a buddhist student and practicioner, I have to say that to me, this is a direct representation of your good karma. I will continue to study and practice your material, and I wish you to find everything you seek on this journey, because as you succeed, so do we all, and vice versa.

    Congratulations Chuck – all the best with your trip to Malta! I will be there with my own family on March 21st. And you are right, a wonderful way to experience a history lesson first hand with your children. One of my children particularly is a history buff and Malta, Greece and Egypt will be amazing for him to visit. My children have travelled the South Pacific extensively but have no experience of the old world so this trip will be a real eye-opener.
    Congratulations also on home-schooling your children (I ‘outsource’ my childrens’ formal schooling – haha!). Home-schooling seems to turn-out very well rounded children. It must also be nice not to have to apply to school to take the children on holidays. Many of the ‘better’ schools here do not allow the pupils to be taken out for holidays at all – sort of like a prison sentence. However, it seems ironic that all this parentally-driven striving for academic excellence is so the children can be ‘successful’ and ‘financially secure’ and then what – Travel? Experience Life? Seems a bit backward to me…

    Congrats on reaching the NYT Bestsellers list once again. I’m a little disappointed about your US-centric policy on mailing out free books though. I realize that international mailing is expensive, and 600 is a lot of books. I’m sure this one logistical problems that could be readily overcome – how about offering 600 links/tickets/whatever to a free audio or e-book download? This would be easier than mailing, no?

    If you get a chance head up to Tanzania. Check out Ngorongoro Crater and the Sarengeti. My wife and I spent 4 weeks in Dar es Salaam and then 6 days on a safari in Jan. 2007. Nothing quite like camping on the edge of Ngorongoro Crater and waking up with a giant elephant walking near you. An American friend of mine runs http://www.tanzaniavolunteer.org/ if you’re looking for a reputable volunteer program to check out. Plus, a guy like you would love Zanzibar. Probably one of the few places in the world, where I have been that you haven’t. All in all, one of the most amazing experiences of my life and they people there are really nice.

    Hey Tim, forget all this book talk I LOVE how you’re pulling out these compelling headlines. Facebook Bankruptcy! That’s pure copy genius.

    As for this international issue whenever there’s a giveaway, from a marketing point of view, I think there’s some interesting psychological stuff going on when you offer something to only a part of the group.

    Think about it, with the current set-up a few hundred people feel great when they get a free book, but how many tens of thousands feel a bit left out (even though their chances of getting a book were tiny).

    I dare say, there are people who wouldn’t have taken ANY action to get the free book, but not being given the chance, still makes them feel excluded.

    Building a community is a tricky business, but at it’s core is Inclusion. So, I’d second what Janet said, which is a great example of “give me solutions not problems”.

    Bring lots of cat food with you. I hear the Prawns in District 9 like cat food. You should introduce them to your 3-minute egg white and spinach recipe. Markedly better than cat food, and more nutritionally dense. Safe travels, bro :)

    Hi Tim, just started the book yesterday, after getting the last copy at Samovar. Feeling VERY inspired by it and it came just at the right time:

    Recently left my bussing job at Firefly (I’ve bussed your table many times!) to take the leap into making full-time my career as a psychotherapist.

    What is unique for me with your book is that I’m not looking for less work. I’m looking for MORE work because I LOVE being a therapist. So I get to change your words, for example, from “[Dreamlining] focuses on activities that will fill the vacuum created when work is removed” (p. 54) to “[Dreamlining] focuses on work that will fill the vacuum created when unemployment is removed” So fun!

    I write a lot. Let me know when you want to collaborate on a book for the unemployed who seek to make a difference in the world. Thank you for your work, Tim.

    If you leave Capetown and head on the Garden Route towards Jeffrey?s Bay you will pass over Bloukran?s Bridge. Stop. Have a beer at the little bar on the side of the road. Then suck it up and jump off the Highest Bungy in the world! It?s unreal. Tell them you?ve done it before and they?ll let you run off or dive backwards…

    Hi Tim,

    Just wanted to comment on your Yabusame ride. I thought you did an awesome job at it, but what amazed me the most was your japanese. It seemed flawless!!! It’s like you’ve lived there all your life. I would like to learn few languages fluently, but I’m not even sure where to start when it comes to learning a new language. If you have any tips please forward to the e-mail provided.

    Not sure if you’ve done this or not, but it would be cool to see you practice some cutting techniques with a master swordsman. You definately have the warrior within and I would like to see how that turns out!

    P.S. If there is a school on how to build balls or Koji – let me know! If not can you also make that your next topic!!

    Tim -

    Your book is one of the very few ‘useful’ books written in the last 10 years. Sure, there are plenty of interesting and insightful books too (Gladwell’s books, for ex). But yours provides a map for achieving the lifestyle one truly wants…and gives tangible, clear examples of how to do it.

    Again, the word I use to describe your book is ‘useful’…a rarity in my experience.

    I’d like to thank you for writing the 4-Hour Work Week. I’ve been unhappy at my job for quite some time now. After reading your book, it gave me a kick in the behind to start doing something about my dissatisfaction. There is no right timing for the important things. I don’t want to be one of those that only dream to do and never get to do, so I jumped in head first. I mentioned a little bit of this on my website hope that’s ok. Thanks again being an inspiration.

    Hey Tim and All,

    ALERT about a company that has be come a SCAM that is mentioned in the GREATEST BOOK Ever. Contact any Celebrity is a SCAM SCAM. I signed up for the trial, after reading “THE” book, 4hww. found the addresses to be common every day one’s you can get from a good internet search. BUT, 7 days later, my CC is billed for the full price, user name and password STOPPED working, and no one there will return my CALLS or EMAILS. NO ONE answers the phone, and now my BANK is saying the only way to stop and AUTO DEBT is close the account. The hassle here is INSANE. DO NOT USE THEM.

    TIM – The Book has give me more good advice then any other media in my life for business and personal time management. Thanks for all the great info. If you reissue the book, again ( I read both versions) I would take these guys out.

    Hey Tim!

    I just watched your seminar about haters, and it’s good stuff. Now, I’m not a professional (I’m at high-school xD) who runs a website (that’s the people you’re basically making it for, right?), but I discovered a few truths myself already. For instance, I recently cut my hair quite short after having long hair for 2.5 years. The next morning I got a lotof negative reactions from the guys in my class, giggling when they saw me and such. Only the stylish “alphas” complimented me, so I just intuitively knew I didn’t have to care about the losers with poor haircuts who would never have the balls to make such a big change on their physique. I actually embraced (like the gladiators in the Spartacus series must ‘embrace the pain’) the mockery. Another example was yesterday when a top wussy was saying negative things about me, which is very likely because of my sudden increase of success with girls (as I said, he’s the biggest wussy with women I know so he’s getting none). I found that negative reactions often come from people who are insecure and envy you. I think I’m going to check out your book. Also, thanks for the video and keep them coming!
